According to the website, as well as historically, students who do the program can finish on time. And yes, the program, at least this year, is mainly a cash grab. Previously when it was for spring admits it made sense because they could get a head start without actually entering the university, but now it doesn’t make sense for fall admits to do it since they would just miss out on getting core classes out of the way.
As for the honors program, it’s not a big deal at AU. The only “perks” would be earlier class registration (which isn’t that hard anyway) and access to mentors within the honors program. The credit load for honors is also equivalent to a minor so depending on the student’s combination of majors and minors they might have to take summer classes because of honors.
Thank you for this candid and very helpful response!
So yesterday got in -15k. Today an email saying I did not get into my program but am in at University College.
You admit, give me a scholarship, and then say I can’t study what I want? What am i missing?
thanks
University College is not an admit program, it is a living learning community. I think you misread the email. What program exactly did you apply for? If it’s one of the special programs (honors, CBRS, PPL, etc) then it makes sense that you didn’t get in as those are highly selective and very few applicants get in.
Just wondering if you know how selective honors is? How many people or what %of the class gets in? Thank you.
Honors typically takes about 40 students per year. No idea on applicant numbers.
D21 was admitted, but also denied admission to the honors college. 4.2 GPA, 35 ACT, 7 APs and 2 dual enrollment classes. She’s disappointed. Being in the honors college was a major component of the appeal of American to her. Not sure how interested she is without it.
Not going to lie, the honors program at AU is pretty meaningless. There’s not a whole lot of difference between being an honors student and a regular student. The honors program is really just taking a few extra classes and living in the same hall as the rest of the program’s students. The main appeal used to be the scholarship they gave with the program but now that’s not given anymore.
to be honest you should stop talking about the program’s history because it’s causing more confusion
I’m just stating what is known about the program. Considering that it is an existing program that has gone through changes, it doesn’t seem inappropriate to consider what it used to be and how that affects what it is now.
Interesting. I’ll let her know.
does anyone know how to appeal for more aid
Email your admissions officer explaining why you need more aid. Just know AU very rarely changes need-based aid, and they never change merit-based aid.
did you have to apply to the honors college? because I didn’t and i just got an email saying congrats on your acceptance into au and the honors program
like i didnt want to be in honors lol idk whats happening
Yes you have to apply. It appears as though that email is a mistake/a glitch.
okay thank uuuu
Me too
I got the same email and rushed here to see if it happened to anyone else lol. I also didn’t apply. Wonder why that email got sent out
It’s likely a glitch wherein they meant to send it to people who got into honors but accidentally sent it to people who didn’t get in. A similar thing happened in the Early Decision round.
