Auburn vs Bama and Others

We are pretty familiar with A&M package and process. With Alabama scaling what is still a very generous package, curious if anyone knows or has any thoughts on the competitiveness of Auburn's package. It appears to be pretty generous, but is "competitive".

Also since son is major MMA/UFC fan and wants to intern at corpoate HQ in Vegas--Does anyone have any experience or idea on UNLV package. It says full cost of attendance and international stipend.

Auburn’s OOS package has been reduced also. It includes room and board but only covers $15K/year of OOS tuition which is $22K+. I think I read somewhere that they are limited to 30 OOS awards, but I can’t find that number online.

Some of the most generous awards, and automatic for OOS, are at New Mexico, Houston, UT-Dallas, Kentucky, South Florida, and Central Florida.

“We are pretty familiar with A&M package and process.”

Can you fill us in on what Texas A&M usually offers? Their web page shows $10,000 per year for National Merit, but I’ve heard on the boards here that they usually offer much more than that after an application has been submitted.

Thank you!

A&M is generally full tuition +. See:

Also, when we visited last year, they indicated to check “interested in applying for scholarships” box on application. There are departmental scholarships etc that they feel most NMF can receive. Good luck. I also think you can “stack” scholarships on top of what they provide so any local scholarships, etc will help offset.

Call the admissions office and ask to talk to one of the dedicated NM counselors. If you are local, pay them a visit. My son was impressed.

I wouldn’t recommend UNLV…the Nevada university system is not good at all.

As Bob mentions, Auburn has changed its NMF scholarship. It only covers $15K of OOS tuition and will not rise as tuition rises…currently around $24k per year…so about $9k short at this point (and rising each year).

Bama’s NMF scholarship covers all of OOS tuition for all 4 years…even if tuition increases. Housing is for one year, but does include Honors Housing if desired. Also includes Study abroad money and an iPad…this year, the NMFs got the new iPad 3, a bluetooth keyboard, etc.

for students who will major in eng’g or comp sci, there wil be an add’l award of 2500 per year.

Comparing the Auburn/Alabama packages:

Auburn OOS cost of tuition+fees+room+board = $35,796
Bama OOS cost of tuition+fees+room+board = $36,150

Auburn yearly scholarship = $15,000 + room + $1,000-$2,000 = $20,730-$21,730 (2012-2013)
Bama yearly scholarship = tuition + $1,000 = $22,950 (2012-2013)

Auburn one-time extras = $2,500 (intern/abroad) + $1,000 (technology) = $3,500
Bama one-time extras = $8,800 (1st year housing) + ~$500 (iPad) + $2,000 (intern/abroad) = $11,300

The value of the Bama scholarship will escalate with tuition and the value of Auburn will escalate with housing, but since tuition is such a big part of OOS cost, Bama increases will almost certainly outstrip Auburn increases.

Even without cost increases, the Bama scholarship starts out with a ~$12,000-$16,000 cost advantage over 4 years. Cost increases will make the gap bigger, and majoring in CS or Engineering will add another $10,000 over 4 years in Bama’s favor.

So economically speaking, the Bama award is quite a bit better, especially for CS/Eng.
