ugh that sucks! I’m sorry
We visited Auburn on Tuesday. Booked last minute to take advantage of my son being on break. There were no campus tour spots left but we signed up for the Engineering info session/tour and College of Science and Math tour (no info session appointments available). We were the only family in each event, which was a big bonus.
Ginn was impressive. The student center was really nice, really new, buzzing with activity. Every place we went we saw students studying together. At the info session and tour they emphasized the resources/offices that help with every aspect of going to college - admissions, scholarships, academic advisors, tutors, co-ops/internships/career, clubs. We were in a conference room for the info session and we went through a presentation on the screen, and they had 2 student volunteers who answered our questions and spoke about their own experiences with finding a co-op, finding research opportunities, connecting with the Auburn community outside campus, etc. For the tour they matched us with a student studying CS (what we indicated as major). He knew the curriculum requirements and could speak to the differences between the 2 majors offered, went in depth about the support available, walked us around the classroom building, and ended with why he chose Auburn. One great thing about their program is you’re pre-engineering the first year, so you have a year to decide which track you want to do. Their scholarship database is set up to automatically match you. There’s someone who makes sure your scholarship is on hold while you’re doing a co-op. These details really show what they mean by student-centered.
COSAM tour guides were also super nice. It has older buildings and we saw a lot of lab rooms, etc. Our son is interested in Math so it didn’t really apply to him. Math is in flux as far as classrooms because it’s in the oldest building on campus, which is slated to be torn down. The new building is expected to be completed in a couple of years. That doesn’t bother our son. The COSAM group of buildings feels more like a traditional campus, vs the really big and new buildings at Ginn. We asked questions about housing and how long it took to figure out the campus, etc.
The adjoining area is the nicest we’ve seen so far on tours. Big sidewalks, well maintained, Target and Publix a block from campus and tons of restaurants. We decided to book a hotel the night before and so we got to walk around a couple of times, tried a couple of restaurants. Overall we really liked Auburn and would be happy to send our kid there. It’s close (1.5 hr drive), they’re pouring resources into the school, the big emphasis on being student-centered, and students looked happy. Our son liked it as well, in a general way. He’s still researching and comparing schools, curricula, etc. But because Alabama is likely free (NMF package) and we would get HOPE as GA residents, Auburn would be one of the more expensive on our list being OOS.
We received the War Eagle Day postcard the day after we booked our tour. Not going again this fall, but if there are admitted days later on we might go again. I’ve seen something about Very Important Tiger days, so if we get an invitation and we’re still considering Auburn, we’d go to that.
Oh one more thing - we got a parking ticket! We didn’t go all the way to the top deck, just past the booth up there, so we were thinking we were in the visitor parking area. $50. Boo.
Keep checking. I see both Fridays still open. We wanted Monday. Son plays football on Fridays.
We are OOS 3.74 1290 SAT APs/Honors/Dual w strong STEM schedule
Than you! Yes, the 27th is showing as available now and we booked that. Was hoping for Monday as well, so will keep checking back. But thrilled to get a date booked.
Friday the 27th opened up so we got a spot! We just had to keep checking back! Very excited!
We are OOS 4.0 GPA 31 ACT, Honors/Dual w/ strong STEM schedule, Applied with undecided major
We got a tip at the Engineering info session regarding undecided. If you’re interested in the Engineering school, their scholarship matching database (AUSOM) will not match you to Engineering scholarships if your major is undecided, so the advisor said to put one in. It doesn’t commit you to any major as everyone is Pre-Engineering the first year.
We are visiting in October for the second time. He received an invitation to visit by a program called “very impressive tiger” Is anyone else going on this type of visit or does anyone know any more information about it?
My son was invited as a VIT as well and it was a fantastic day. Very one-on-one and personalized. In addition to a campus tour he had a meeting with an advisor in his prospective major (engineering), lunch in the dining hall with an admissions official, etc. Those invitations usually go to kids with high test scores and academic credentials, so kudos to your kiddo.
My son heard from another classmate that EA 1 decisions will come out on the 10th? Anyone else hear this??
I hope so! It says mid-October so it is definitely a possibility!
We havent heard anything one way or another personally, however, I think i read on another forum that they heard between the 9th and the 13th.
FWIW - EA1 notification dates last few years:
Wed 10/21/20
Wed 10/13/21
Fri 10/14/22
10/10 would be historically early for them. Also as having gone through S23’s process last year, in general ignore anyone that says “I heard from someone who heard from someone that…” Unless you’re hearing it direct from the school treat it as nothing more than wishful thinking.
My D24, who is a DE student, just received an email from the Auburn First advising team that the first round of decisions would be released mid to late October, and that they would be released in waves to prevent technical issues. No specific dates were mentioned in the email, but the overall message was “don’t panic.”
But now I am panicking Ahhhh. Waves?! My daughter is going to be on pins and needles until she hears. Especially because some of her best friends have also applied so if some of them find out before the others thats going to make it worse. This process makes it hard to not stress!
My son applied on 9/12 (pushing it, I know) and his school submitted his transcript through Naviance on 9/13. It did not show up as “received” in the Auburn portal until 9/16, so I’m thinking it’s unlikely he will be part of the first round, but I am hoping since Auburn is his 1st choice. We did get a WED postcard, but we went on a tour in May so we decided not to go. We would be interested in VIT if he were to be invited. He should meet the ACT/GPA targets for that. We have already heard from his 2nd and 3rd choices, so this is the big one!
A lot of schools do “waves” which yes, adds a fair amount of stress to the process. Interesting that they would be doing that now since in the past 3 years it’s been a single email blast for each round.
I agree. Especially since they have another wave going out for EA2 and EA3.
Or the “waves” that they mean are those decisions for EA2 and EA3. See - can speculate it any number of ways and stress about it or just wait for the email from them (which I know isn’t easy).
How did the war eagle invite arrive?
Snail Mail or via the student’s Auburn portal ?
