Audition Clothing for DePaul and Syracuse

My D is auditioning for DePaul on campus and Syracuse at Unifieds in Chicago this coming weekend. They both specify loose or comfortable clothing to move in. DePaul says you can change if you need to after your initial monologue but Syracuse just says to wear clothes and shoes to move in. Anyone have experience with these two auditions and tips on what to wear?

At Unifieds you will see a broad spectrum of outfits. Schools frown upon clothes that restrict movement i.e. suits or outfits that can lead to unwanted exposure. A number of girls in my son’s class wore a skirt & sweater over dance clothes. Others wore jeans with a nice top. You should be able to find pants that have the versitility of sweats but are made from a dressier looking fabric. Their basic goal was to look pulled together but still be able to crawl on the floor & bark like a dog without flashing anyone. Your daughter will want to make sure her hair is styled so her face is fully visible during her audition. She might want to have a foldable fabric bag with her to put her coat, gloves, hat and scarf into when she arrives at the audition venue.

Thank you for replying! This is so helpful.

My d had several pairs of dark skinny cut pants that had stretch in them, and paired them with a nice top. Depaul didn’t do dance, it was just movement and my d really enjoyed it.

That’s what we are going to do. Thank you!

@ringoandlyra I’ll also be in Chicago with my daughter She is scheduled to audition at DePaul on 2/7. She’ll also audition for Syracuse, but on campus the following weekend (she’ll stay overnight with an old classmate who graduated last year and is a freshman who loves the school!)

I hope your daughter does well and “breaks the leg” (I recently was told that is the original way to say it rather than break a leg - something to do with equity actors who were playing bit roles and whether they were paid or not depended on getting a part of their body past a certain point of the stage called the leg - Anyone else ever hear of that?)

My daughter had auditions for Rutgers, UMinn, UArts and Marymount Manhattan and was very comfortable wearing her usual nice/casual clothing. (She’s rarely in a dress or skirt, so pants were obviously in her comfort zone.) She’s doing straight acting, and she is comfortable wearing/moving booties with a slight heel and has worn both jeans and black slacks that are practically leggings or yoga pants but have a bit of flare, paired with a casual shirt or blouse with a flattering fit (not sloppy, but not tucked in). All she really changed from what she’d wear out to a movie with friends is her makeup, which she made much heavier than her usual more natural style. She is wearing her hair down, since it is down in her headshot, but she has a hair elastic with her so she can quickly put it back as needed. (She’ll wear it half back in that case.)
