MM violin performance

My list so far:

Manhattan School of Music: prescreening passed (12/14)
Rice: rejected (12/20)
Mannes (The New School): prescreening passed (12/29)

Waiting to hear from Yale, Juilliard, NEC and Stony Brook.

No prescreening at Boyer College (Temple University), Oberlin, Peabody.

Violau - Congrats on a very nice list so far. Rice is so tough. Are you applying to Oberlin for a MM in Historical Performance?

For BM Composition, I am still waiting to hear from Michigan, Peabody, Eastman, and NEC.

Thanks! I applied for the graduate diploma at Oberlin.
And I do agree, Rice is tough. I wasn’t thrilled with my prescreening video though so I’m not too disappointed. This whole process is really exciting as I’m applying from Europe!
Good luck everyone!

At Frost it’s the Contemporary Music Songwriting program, so maybe the responses are on different days. Guess we will see what the next few days will bring. And a January of waiting for Berklee…

I wish they would have had a contemporary voice program that you didn’t have to be a songwriter for. My D would have applied for that. She wants to get into songwriting though. Yes, waiting for Berklee will be tough, but not too far away thank goodness. Happy New Year.

Last year Frost sent their contemporary song writing audition invitation emails out on Dec. 26. So sorry that you have to continue to wait this year. I am sure it will be soon enough. Did anyone hear back from Berklee yet on surprise early acceptances? They did that last year and the year before that. My S didn’t get his acceptance until Jan. 31, though, and it was brutal waiting. I remember being in your shoes last year. Good luck to everyone applying to contemporary music programs!

@poprockmom - We did not get an early response from Berklee, at least not yet. Only 30 days to go, but it will feel like an eternity.

Christine, congrats on your D’s Frost invite. My D is at Berklee now studying jazz and contemporary voice, and her major is CWP. There is a lot to do at Berklee with voice, especially if you have a lot of energy and good time management. My D is loving it with 2 semesters to go.

@SnowflakeVT - Thank you. Berklee is def her #1 choice. The whole atmosphere and vibe really suits her. She was there for a week in July for the Stage Performance and Vocal workshops and LOVED it! What is the CWP major? A combo of jazz and contemporary would be perfect for my D.

Just got an email from NEC: Will be auditioning there also!

Has anyone heard from Stony Brook yet?

Has anyone heard from Berklee yet? They say January 31, but it’s getting close!

My son is also waiting to hear from Berklee for Fall 2013 voice/songwriting. He got invited to audition at Frost School on February 1st so we are heading there.

I called the Berklee admission’s office early in January to ask about their decision timeline and talked to the counselor assigned to our son. I explained that my son had been invited to Miami and that his first choice was Berklee. I asked them if they would be releasing any more decisions (a few of his friends were accepted in the December release), because if they were we might wait to make travel/lodging arrangements at Miami.

The person I talked with said that no additional decisions would be communicated before January 31st (I believe at midnight). My understanding (may not be completely accurate) was that the committee began meeting in December and worked through the files of a certain portion of the applicants who had auditioned and informed those who had been accepted at that point. The committee would then recovene after break and would release the remaining names 1/31. The person told me not to read anything into my sons not being in that initial wave. I don’t know if that is completely accurate, but it sounds plausible.

Unfortunately the timing of the announcement couldn’t be worse for the Miami audition. My understanding is that they release the names at midnight on January 31st (night before Miami audition). If my son is accepted the Miami audition is a moot point and we will have spent a $2k on a nice 3+ day trip. If he isn’t accepted I imagine he will be pretty disappointed and will have a hard time sleeping. I have told him to work through both scenarios in advance so he is well prepared for either outcome. I don’t think “not checking” until after the audition is viable either as he REALLY wants to go to Berklee. He went to their 5 week program and loved the school, campus, and city.

Oh well, thems the apples. The dates just fell that way.

bonski, I have a question for you to ponder. Are you willing to pay nearly full price to Berklee in order for your son to attend? If not, attend the Miami audition regardless of the timing.

My twins were accepted 2011 to Berklee in the December group. They went from a big high to a massive low in less than 6 hours when the scholarship offers came a few hours after their acceptance e-mails. They were not offered enough to allow either of them to attend and Berklee was their first choice.

My S also applied to Miami, did a regional audition and received acceptance with a good scholarship/grant package, much more $$ than Berklee offered. He did not choose to attend Miami either, opted to attend UNT Jazz Studies program.

Bonski…I live in the Boston area. Tell your son that today it is windy dry and freeeeeezing and Miami sounds simply wonderful. A three day trip to Miami right now sounds dreamy. Also tell your son to not just assume that Berklee is the right place for him. I know he liked the five week, but the five week is super intense and it happens in summer. Your son might visit Frost and change his mind about Berklee being hi first choice especially since after attending the 5 week he knows a lot more about music and what he will need to personally make progress. I think you should tell him to go to Frost with an open mind. Also what feedback did he get during the five week? Did he audition when he was there? If he did well at the five week and you are not hoping for one of their giant scholarships then he is likely to be admitted.

I agree that he should still plan to visit and audition at Frost. First, it forces him to keep his mind open about music schools, and 2nd, it could allow some scholarship pressure back to Berklee if Frost offers him any scholarship money.

Regarding the 5-week at Berklee … the 5-week is very intense, both for talented high performers and partiers, but at the same time it is a reliable slice of part of the Berklee experience. Some of my D’s friends from her first semester partied too much once they started to attend Berklee and those folks didn’t end up coming back for a 2nd semester, but there is a way to have reasonable fun and work intensely.

Also, if he auditioned for a scholarship during the 5-week prior to his senior year and didn’t get it, he may not be in the running for big scholarships for his audition, but it seems like you are aware of that. If he attended the 5-week two summers before his senior year and didn’t get a scholarship, then he still has lots of time to improve and gain experienece to have a stronger audition during his senior year that could put him more closely in the running for scholarship.

For the accept emails at Berklee, I recall they find out whether they are accepted just after midnight (12:01 AM Eastern Time on 1/31) and then by 5 or 6pm that same day you could hear about scholarships.

Thanks for the responses, and very good point on the scholarship/aid potential. Also good points on summer Boston vs. winter Boston. He did well at 5 week and got a very nice letter of recommendation from a faculty member. He auditioned for but did not get a scholarship during the 5 week, but felt he had a better audition this time around.

I believe he will be accepted as he fits the profile of what they are looking for, has a strong list of accomplishments as a musician, and is a talented songwriter (says his Dad) and singer (and plays drums, guitar, keys too). But there are lots of talented kids out there so you never know.

On the weather front we are from Wisconsin so he is used to colder weather. In fact he burns easily and is generally not a huge fan of hot weather, so the tropical climate of Miami is likely a neutral feature, although it will be interesting to see what he thinks now as he scrapes his frozen car windows to start his days out.

I was wondering whether it was midnight of the 30th (12:01 a.m. 12/31) or essentially midnight on the 1/31. It helps if it is as you suggest 12:01 am. 12/31 so that would give him a full day+ to digest the news either way. Thanks for the information! Can’t believe we are only a week away!

@bonski. That’s a good question. My D also has an audition at Frost on Feb 1 and she is also waiting for a decision from Berklee. We already decided that we would not check for the Berklee email until after her Frost audition is done, so if it’s bad news, it won’t ruin her for the audition.

Good luck with Frost and Berklee.

Yes, if you stay up on 1/30/2013, one minute later it is 1/31/2013.

My D applied as a January start, so her notification date was 9/15, but it was one minute after midnight the night of 9/14 that she found out, and based on last year 1/31 posts, I am concluding the same continues to hold true.

I remember how I learned about the 12:01AM concept because I was at home on my computer at 10pm the night before the date Berklee had posted, and my D pinged me to say, “only 2 more hours.” In my head I wasn’t even thinking about it because I thought it would be 5pm on the day of the 31st, so I ended up staying up until 12:03am when she told me her results. She applied as a January start, since she was transferring from Boston U, but Berklee doesn’t differentiate between transfers and first time freshman in the audition process.

This was 2 years ago, so I hope I am still accurate.
