Anybody know when the SU on-campus auditions are?

I just checked their website today, and still am not seeing it posted anywhere.

I think my D called yesterday and was told after Sept. 15 to schedule audition dates.

for anyone interested in scheduling a MT audition during Syracuse's fall reception dates on campus, they are taking reservations now. Here is a link to the web site with information on who to contact:

update on audition dates... again. I actually did make reservations and an audition appt. this morning with the admissions office for October 20th. However, I just received a phone call stating the only fall reception dates they will be having MT auditions on are November 10 and 17. So ignore the information on the web site link I posted earlier.

Teri, it is sweet of you to share this information with others who are looking into Syracuse this year.

Syracuse is a little confused! And now so are we! I also recieved a phone call this afternoon telling me that there would be no audition at the fall reception on October 20th. I then called the drama department office to find out when other dates would be available, as the girl who called to tell me that October 20th was no longer an option had no idea when actual auditions would be and my D is already auditioning at other places on the two November fall reception dates. I was then told by the drama department that there ARE auditions on October 20th for musical theater! She checked with someone (head of department maybe) while I was on the phone with her, because she was very startled when I told her I had been called about the auditions not happening on October 20th, and she says it is only MUSIC auditions which aren't happening that day, but MT auditions are! She says she will put D back on the list for October 20th and I should get a confirmation of this tomorrow? We'll see! So TeriWtt, you might call back tomorrow? As if this whole process wasn't confusing enough already!

Are you doing the entire reception day or just the audition? I scheduled my D for Nov. 10 for the entire experience but now we are second guessing? Will this be helpful or redundant (getting a tour of SU isn't that critical for us, as you know!)... will it intensive nerves or distract from them? Any thoughts?

CRAP! (excuse my language!). nydancemom... so I assume you got the same phone call I did from admissions this afternoon (literally minutes before I was going to make our airline reservations!). Since we are scheduling an audition at SUNY-Geneseo at the same trip, I have already contacted them about switching our date from October 19th to November 16th; this is going to be really embarassing to call them back tomorrow and tell them we want to go back to October 19th. I already cancelled my hotel reservations for the 19th and rescheduled at another hotel (my first choice in Syracuse was not available October 19th) for November.

This is the dilemma... if we reschedule (again) SU for October 20, then we fly into Buffalo early Thursday, have our tour and audition at SUNY-Geneseo that afternoon, then drive to Syracuse and stay Thursday and Friday nights, driving back to Buffalo Saturday to fly back. We can't leave here Wednesday night because my daughter has a mandatory show choir rehearsal, just for the girls, from 6-8PM.
She would still miss Thursday and Friday of school.

If we pick the November date, we can fly into Buffalo Wednesday night, drive to Geneseo, stay in a hotel for the night, and be rested for the tour/audition at SUNY on Thursday. The rest of the trip would be the same as if we did it in October, and she would still miss Thursday and Friday of school. However, with the November date, she's missing that Thursday and Friday the week prior to Thanksgiving, when we're thinking about pulling her out for a day and a half early (Tuesday afternoon/Wednesday) to go to either Bermuda or San Juan, Puerto Rico (haven't made up our minds yet). So in the course of a week, she'd be missing 3 1/2 days. Her school is on the block schedule and that term she will only have Master Singers, French and Theatre 2 (her fourth period is free) - not big deals. We were originally going to do Elon on November 17th, but because it's just one school, we could fly out Thursday night and she'd only miss one day of school, Friday. If we do Syracuse in November, she'd have to do Elon on October 27th, coming back the 28th; that weekend starts tech week for her fall play and I don't know how her theatre director will respond to her not being there Friday and part of Saturday (although she's not on stage for this play - she is head costume mistress - ...long story). If we do Elon in November (she can't do any auditions on 11/10), then she'd only miss one day of school the week prior to Thanksgiving.

Just a quick plug for my favorite airline - Southwest. I grew up in Texas and remember the start-up of Southwest. We take it anywhere we can, and we will be using it for all our trips this fall. As I mentioned earlier that I'd almost made our airline reservations before hearing from Syracuse, I was being a bit dramatic... if I had made those reservations, there would be absolutely no penalty for changing them if I'd had to - this is the main reason I love Southwest. If Southwest offers a lower fare between now and when we leave, I can cancel our original reservation (with no fees or penalties), get the entire amount credited toward future tickets, and rebook at the lower fare. People either love or hate Southwest, but I happen to love them for just this reason, and the fact that they're on time and reliable more than any other airline I've ever flown, by far. Sometimes it involves flying into a smaller airport and driving an hour or two to your destination, but the savings far outweigh the inconvenience. Just something to share with you all.

evasmom, Syracuse is not that big of a campus, and you can leisurely walk around it by yourself if you don't want to do the formal tour. If your daughter is accepted into the program, then perhaps next spring you can visit again for an official tour. However, do be sure to explore the Crouse College building - the architecture is spectacular and rich with history. This is the home of the Visual and Performing Arts program.

When I spoke with the SU admissions office today, they said that although my daughter would not be assigned an audition time, she was guaranteed an audition on Friday afternoon. I was told that after the morning presentations/tours, not everyone stays for the afternoon; so when you arrive in the morning, you sign in for an audition, and they let you know what time to come back. I'd ask your daughter what she wants to do; she may not want to "mingle" with others, instead wanting to remain focused on her audition, or she may appreciate the support she might find by meeting other auditionees. I'm sure if you signed up for the morning presentation, and after you arrived she changed her mind, you could skip out on the presentation after signing in for the audition.

Thanks, Terriwt
I think we may play it by ear, as it will be her first audition so who knows how she'll feel?
Sorry if I was misleading about seeing the campus... I thought my location showed up on my little name profile thing... we live in Syracuse and I went to grad school there, so the campus is already well known to us. I did think that D might like meeting up with other auditionees in the morning session though. Is anybody from cc looking at the Nov. 10 date?
Also if anyone has general questions about Syracuse feel free to ask, there are a couple of us around here that will be happy to help!

Yep, sounds like the same phone call. Ill let you know if I hear from them today! Isn't this audition scheduling crazy! We thought we had Syracuse first--we live here, so thought it would be nice to get it done early. We've got several lined up before Christmas, so I hear you on the missing school part. We were going to drive to most to save money, but when I started to realize that many are on Fridays with really long drives to get to them, so we would have to leave Thursday morning. And we have them lined up every weekend in November (except Thanksgiving) and the first weekend in December. Well we decided that isn't possible with 3 AP courses, her other courses, dance classes, etc. so we are probably flying to at least two of them, just to save time. We have seriously thought about doing NYC unifieds, but since D is a dancer, that really doesn't seem like the best option for her. Plus I'm very nervous about putting all our "eggs in one basket" in case she gets sick or something.

Southwest isn't an option from Syracuse I dont think, unfortunately. I've heard it's good. But Syracuse pretty much has nothing reasonable ever, to anywhere--we are kind of the laughing stock of upstate NY when it comes to airlines available and high airfares! I will check out Rochester and Albany though--maybe I can get something cheaper from there.

Evasmom -I'll call you! We need to get together to compare notes!

Check Buffalo airfares. From here it is much cheaper to fly to Buffalo than to either Syracuse or Rochester. Since Southwest Airlines services Buffalo (as they do Albany), all the airlines have cheaper fares. Albany may be similar, I've just not ever done that! I don't know which city is closer to Syracuse. For the audition, though, we flew into Syracuse to save time.

So wait; are there auditions the 20th or not? And, if so, which of y'all are doing it? Also, we don't need to have our application finished at the time, right? We can just call and schedule them, right?

danimal88: as of yesterday morning, after speaking wtih Judy McCumber, who works in the recruiting office of VPA, my daughter has a reservation and audition scheduled for October 20th. However, 10 minutes prior to calling her, when I spoke with the admissions office, they still believe there are no MT auditions on the 20th, and would not schedule one (which is why I called Judy as nydance mom suggested). As nydance mom reported, there are no "music" auditions that day, but there are MT auditions on the 20th, according to Judy. Judy was going to follow up with the admissions office and correct them - if you call admissions and they tell you there are no auditions scheduled for the 20th, I'd call Judy to set it up.

Regarding the timing of the application, I'd ask Judy about that. My daughter is doing the Common Application, and is about done, so it won't be an issue for her. There is a common application supplement for Syracuse, but the work required is minimal compared to the Common Application.

I just called Syracuse today to set up my daughter's audition and they told me that the dates will be posted online on the 15th (friday) and that I would need to register for an audition time through the site. So I guess they aren't setting anymore up over the phone?

I called Syracuse today and re-registered D for the October 20th audition. The fall reception reservation office now understands that there was confusion about the MT auditions. and that they ARE happening on October 20th.
Kaysmom, the regular audition dates are going up on the 15th. The dates Teriwtt and evasmom and I are talking about are technically "fall reception" dates which you can also audition at (except the first one on Oct. 9th) There are two in November plus the October 20th date. You have to call the phone number given on the website for that. Look under "visit" and then "on campus" and you'll see fall receptions. Call that number and you can reserve one of those three dates. Otherwise, you have to wait for the actual Visual and Performing Arts Department website to have actual audition dates which supposedly will be on Sept. 15th.
Hope that helps.

Oh, thanks so much! Now I get it...that definitely helps!

I called on Monday to ask if my D could visit the college that day and was asked, immediately, if she wanted to do her audition. The woman I spoke with seemed to indicate that they were holding auditions and portfolion reviews (for the fine arts peeps) on that day, as part of the fall reception days. I informed her that my D is only a junior, and we just wanted to visit, and she said that was fine. We will be back for the audition next year at this time ... good luck to those going through it now. Maybe we will run into one another on campus October 20. (I grew up in nearby Camillus, and this will be my first visit home in about 20 years .....)

L

I am also hoping to audition on October 20th at Syracuse. I haven't signed up yet, but will do so tomorrow hopefully. It would be cool if we all met there!
