Is anyone auditioning in Washington, D.C. during MLK weekend? I am!!

January 27th at syracuse, it will be the first one!

Jan 20th Syracuse

Hi There,

My daughter is audition in D.C. She will be there the morning of the 13th of January! Good luck to you!

I meant to put this up a long time ago.. as in right after I auditioned! Well you know how time flies...

Anways, here is my experience auditioning at Syracuse. I know a few others have posted similar things, but in my opinion you can never have enough information about these things!

I am from Ithaca, NY, so I only had about an hours drive. Still, my dad and I went up the night before so that I wouldn't be tired the next morning. We had signed up for the Fall Open House thing, so I don't know how many of you who still have to audition will be at that. It was pretty boring and standard, so I'll skip over that :)

They split those of us who were auditioning off and bussed us to the Syracuse Stage (where pretty much all the MT classes are). I was surprised that there were only about 5 of us auditioning that day, it was a little unnerving. From the moment we stepped into the audition, I felt rushed. We were hustled into the entrance and given paperwork to fill out. Before we even had a good chance to get started, we were taken to a small theatre (we got to see the set of Rookery Nook-more on that later), for a quick talk by the head of the MT dept. During this time I guess we were supposed to fill out our forms because suddenly it was time for us to go. Those of us auditioning were taken down an elevator to where the dance studios are and into the locker room to change.

Once we changed into our dance clothes, we went into the dance studio and had to rush to fill out the rest of our forms, hand them off the the students helping out and stretch before we began. Tony, the dance teacher, came over to each of us in turn and had us point each foot to the side (tendu for those of you who are ballet-inclined :) and also lifted each leg to the side to see flexibility and turn out (I assume). We did some plies and a little bit of stretching, but mostly jumped right into the routine. It was taught quickly and while it wasn't really super hard, it was a challenge (I have been a dancer for 13 years, but among us auditioning there were many different levels of experience). He had us do it in pairs, about three times each. Then we did some simple things across the floor.

Next we were rushed back to the locker rooms to get our sweaty bodies into our nice audition clothes (ah the joys of auditioning!) and back upstairs to the holding room. We got a quick vocal warm up as well. Then they asked for volunteers to go first, and since I thought it would be best to get it over with, I went first. They had me do my songs and monologue in the same room (I got to choose the order). It was all over very quickly.

Overall, I felt very rushed and honestly, I didn't feel very welcomed there. Some of the students I met were extremely nice and very postive, but some seemed quite negative towards us. I am not saying anything to put down the school itself, the training there seems to be excellent, and the dance program looks very strong. I was just a little put off by the environment. I won't say any more on the subject, my main goal here is to give you all a run down of the day, not influence your view of the school!

That night, my dad and I went to see Rookery Nook, the play that Syracuse was putting on. It was just wonderful. The talent was uniformly great, the show was cute and funny and it was a nice way to end what was a pretty stressful day. As I am going to these auditions I am finding that is really nice, if scheduling allows, to try to see a show after the audition. It is a nice way to wind down, and gives even more insight into the school!

Another tip about Syracuse, or any audition: make sure all your clothes and shoes are in a bag that is easy to carry. I had a bulky garment bag and a dance bag and it was too much to carry all around. For my next auditions I am working on streamlining my bags!

If anyone has questions, I am happy to answer! Good luck everyone!

NYC audition for my d Thursday morning, the people from SU were the nicest, informative, did everything they could to make the audition experience a good one, small group of 7 students, spent a great deal of time with each, we were there for about 2 hours, dance audition not superhard but challenging; said they don't put tremendous weight on the dance portion but hard to tell as they seemed very aware of each students skills, the pianist was amazing and could play anything and seemed to know almost any song you could suggest including an Italian aria, my d was asked to sing a 3rd song since they felt they wanted a better sense of vocal range; hope that's a good sign and not an indication that her contrasting songs didn't contrast enough. Anyway, it was a good experience for a first audition and really shows how you need to be prepared for anything! They expect 900-1000 to auditon and they will take about 25 students. Yikes the odds for all these programs are scary.

Sounds like a good audition Shellipearl. Those numbers sound amazing. When my D auditioned for BFA in MT at Syracuse two years ago, they said that 400 tried out for MT and they want a class of 20 (remember that a school accepts more than the targetted number for the class and hopes to yield 20, doesn't accept just 20). I have to think that the numbers you gave INCLUDE those auditioning for BFA in Acting. The BFA in MT wants 20 kids and so there are others admitted for Acting (I forget that number but maybe that is also 20). My D only tried for MT. So, maybe 900 try out for BOTH MT and Acting combined. That is what I think. I think the admit rate is likely about 5% for MT.

Anyother cc'ers auditioning Jan. 20th in Syracuse?

I am auditioning then :-)

S is, too!

AM or P.M ? My d is A.M. Where u staying? We are at the Sheration

How about friday the 26th?? :D I'm auditioning then.
