My husband is at SU dropping my oldest daughter off for the school year (a non-performing arts major), and I asked him to go speak with someone face to face at the VPA building this morning regarding fall audition dates. This is what they told him:

The University has four Fall Reception dates scheduled for all SU prospective students (two in October and two in November). Three of those dates are Fridays, and one is a Monday. She said the musical theatre audition dates will coincide with the three Fridays, which according to the web site are: October 20, and November 10 and 17.

Between Sept. 1-15, the on-line registration form will become available to arrange audition times for those dates. That is the process they use for scheduling auditions for these dates (I'm not sure what they do for other dates).

Hope this helps anyone looking for Syracuse information.

Teriwtt, that was sweet of you to post this information for others. When my child auditioned at Syracuse, she did not do one of those fall reception dates but rather auditioned on a regular audition day at the end of January. I recall their audition appointment method for those dates had been by phone. However, as you know, things could change from year to year.

I didn't know you have a child who attends Syracuse (not in performing arts). I do not. However, my oldest child is doing a study abroad program through Syracuse this fall and so we have been dealing with Syracuse ourselves. She attends Brown, however.

Yes, she will be a junior this year, and will be studying abroad in London for the spring semester, so I'm sure I will be learning more about study abroad in the next few weeks (although she does already know quite a bit, but I haven't seen any forms, yet).

She is a PR Newhouse major (again, depending on who you ask, one of the top three journalism schools in the country, and only accepts 10% of its freshman applicants to Newhouse). When we did college visits when she was a junior, I had no idea what the strong musical theater schools were. She and I actually visited several schools that my daughter is now applying to: Ithaca, NYU, Michigan, Penn State. Those are all also programs that have very reputable PR communication programs. She wouldn't consider Northwestern (another my daughter will be applying to) because she didn't want to be that close to home.

If anyone has any questions about Syracuse University or Syracuse in general, I can perhaps address them based on our experience.

Teri, surely Newhouse is tops in the field of journalism. Two of my D's best friends at home that just graduated HS (which is truly her real class but she graduated a year early) got into Newhouse, but chose elsewhere, believe it or not.

It's good that you already saw several of the schools your younger one is applying to because they truly do overlap with some schools that are strong in journalism. By the way, I have been to all of those as well as my D (the MT one) applied and auditioned at the same ones.

You will be hearing lots from the study abroad office at Syracuse. I can't begin to tell you the forms to end all forms to go abroad!! :D I don't know what Great Britain is like but just for the Visa for Italy, I can't begin to tell you all the documents that had to be gotten for the Consulate and that is not counting what the college wants. So far, Syracuse has been very good to deal with in their Study Abroad office. My D is doing their program in Florence. She will be flying over there with the program and we'll meet up with them at JFK to do that. First, however, she has to get home from France tomorrow where she has been all summer! ;)

Syracuse also holds offsite auditions SEPARATE FROM Unifieds. Thru last year, Syr did not participate in Unifieds, instead they conducted a series of auditions in some of the main cities that Unifieds also goes to: NYC, Chicago, at least one California (can't recall if LA or SF or both) and maybe a couple additional. Their website spelled out the scheduling procedure clearly, but as I recall wasn't posted until end of Aug or early Sept.

My D will be an MT freshman at Syracuse--we roll tomorrow! Many belated thanks to all we learned so much from on this forum, as well as best wishes to all who are parting with a child about now, and to all those now heading into the audition/application season. Have faith--there is light at the end of the tunnel! (Then another tunnel after that I suppose).

FYI, my D auditioned with Syr in Chicago in early January.

Syracuse had a wonderful audition day. We also got to meet lots of CC friends there. Good luck to rising seniors! We did a regular on-campus audition day in early Dec. (yes, in the beautiful falling snow).

On study abroad, Elon sent an e-newsletter today about rankings both in Princeton Review and US News & WW. It said that in US News & WW, under "programs to look for", ranked by college administrators, that Elon was recognized in 7 of 8 categories, more than any other school. Under Study Abroad, of the MT schools we often discuss on CC, the 3 on the list were NYU, Syracuse, and Elon. A huge percentage of Elon's students study abroad, and as a Fellows participant, my son will get a little extra money for this!

mwparent: interesting screen name - my daughter at Syracuse has the initials of MW. And she will be part of the awesome Goon Squad tomorrow. You will love the Goon Squad; I was so impressed with move-in day due to their help her freshman year.

I'm aware that Syracuse does off site auditions throughout the year, but since we're trying to spread out the audition dates and my Syracuse daughter will be in London in the spring, we chose to do Syracuse this fall. We will also schedule SUNY-Geneseo on the same trip, but their auditions are open and they're willing to work around our visit to Syracuse. So for the fall, we have Syracuse, SUNY-Geneseo, Elon, and Muhlenberg (even though it's a non-audition program, we need to visit and have her audition for talent scholarship). That saves four auditions at Chicago Unifieds in February. Even that many at Unifieds makes me nervous - I've read horror stories of kids banking a majority of their auditions on Unifieds, then getting sick. So this way, we have it spread out, and since we live in the Chicago area, if she gets sick, at least we won't have spent a ton of money on travel and accommodations, and will still be possibly able to reschedule individual schools on their campuses. At least that's my rationale for now.

For anyone else in the Chicago area, the National Association for College Admission Counseling will be having a fair on the Northwestern campus on Tuesday, October 3rd from 7-9. You can check out this web site for other dates/locations: http://www.nacacnet.org/MemberPortal/Events/CollegeFairs/PVA/

Quite a few of the schools that are discussed on CC will be participating with exhibits.

Thank you so much, Teri! I've been waiting for those dates to solidify my fall audition schedule. You are great.
