Autumn 2013 Transfer Applicants

I'm interested in getting to know all of you! Where you're transferring from, what's your intended major, why you want to go to the UW, what other schools have you or will you be applying to, all those good kind of things.

I've heard that it's going to be a waiting game from now on (if you've already submitted your application), so let's keep each other company and in good spirit until June. I'm also more than happy to help anyone with what I can, if you're currently going through the application process.

Hello!

I am from Green River Community College and I am a communications major striving to enter the field of public relations. I work as the advertising manager and the managing editor at my college newspaper and I am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. As of now, I have 60 credits and I will be getting my AA in the spring. I am applying to attend the UW in the fall quarter.

I chose the UW for numerous reasons: 1) Even though they may be cutting funding from their communications program (As they are with others), they have a great one. I did look into WSU’s program, but they put very little emphasis into their public relations program in comparison. 2) I want to stay close to family, my younger brother specifically. He just moved to Seattle due to family issues and staying close to him will allow me to be there for him. 3) While wanting to stay close to my brother, I want to attend am affordable (and amazing) school. My other options here in Seattle are private schools, and I don’t have the money for them.

I am applying to WSU and WWU along with UW. My second choice would be WWU because their program is pretty good as well. I don’t know much about it though because my concentration has been on UW’s program, and I have tailored my entire college career to getting into UW.

I am still working on my personal statement, so I am taking into consideration all of the advice given to me. Even though I know that I am competing against everyone else who is applying for the fall, I wish you (and them) all the best of luck and I hope to see them there!

Cheers!

Thanks shaemus for the response, and good luck to you as well! We’ll need it. What are your stats? From the looks of it, you seem to have some decent EC’s and experiences in the area, which is a plus.

As for me, I am planning on transferring from Portland Community College. I currently have 69 credits and will be earning my A.A.O.T. (Associate of Arts - Oregon Transfer) in June. I plan on majoring in psychology with the intent of going to graduate school and becoming a mental health professional (i.e. a counselor or psychologist). I currently have a 3.95 cumulative GPA and a 4.00 major GPA; but here’s the catch, I dropped out of high school back in 2007 and never graduated. It has always been something that has bothered me and has consistently created barriers for me, and I’m hoping I can put this in the past and continue to move forward.

I am also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, but am not too heavily involved. Outside of school however, I work as a crisis worker answering a suicide hotline. I have done this every week for the past year (256 hours and counting)! My sister committed suicide when I was in high school, which is one of the many reasons I want to study psychology and the reason for this line of work. I chose UW as one of my options because of the competitiveness of the major and it’s abundance of undergraduate research opportunities in psychology, as well as a department honors program that capitalizes on this.

I have also applied to the University of Oregon, Washington State University, and the University of California Berkeley. I am split between U.W. and U.C.B., but I am legally a WA resident, so U.W. will naturally come out on top. The U.O. is a solid alternative and W.S.U. is my fall back school.

Let me know if you’d like me to look over your personal statement!

I have a 3.5 cumulative and a 4.0 major. I came out of highschool a total slacker, so I had to teach myself how to study. Once I had my rhythm down, I took a huge load of ECs and it has had an impact on my GPA (mostly on classes I struggled in). You have great stats, and from the sounds of it, a lot of potential for a great personal statement. I will be sending in my app sometime in January, so I would really like for you to take a gander at my personal statement. Thank you for the offer!

Hi! I’m glad this thread got started. It’s early still but the wait is already killing me.

For me, I’m an in-state student at BC with a 3.8 GPA there, taking a full load while working full time. I’ll be done this Spring with 105 credits since I changed intended majors halfway through. I graduated HS over a decade ago, went to a giant University in my home state and dropped out after a year and some trauma with the awful grades to show for it. Then I completed a technical Associate’s and have been working in the tech sector ever since. I started feeling burnt out a few years ago and decided to go back to school with the intent of completely changing careers. I still haven’t completely decided what to do after I graduate, but I’m planning on doing a dual degree in Anthropology with an Archaeology concentration, and Astronomy/Physics.

I’m working on completing the physics sequence which should be done in spring, along with the last prereq for Anthropology. It’s pretty obvious from my transcript that I changed tracks so I’m a little worried they’re going to think I just can’t make up my mind. Plus I was sick for all of last year (have documentation) so I’m finishing three quarters later than intended. Hopefully an explanation of all this in my personal statement, plus other good points (PTK member, volunteered at the Humane Society, older but wiser etc) will help make up for it.

Like @psychguy I picked UW because of the research opportunities. They have one of the leaders in my favorite area of Astronomy research and the others things going on all sound pretty interesting, too. While it may be putting all my eggs in one basket, they’re the only school I’m applying to. I love this area and it just so happens that UW is strong in my desired fields so it works out. Well, if I get in.

@shaemus
I feel you on the studying thing. I spent most of high school bored out of my mind (A’s in classes I liked, B’s and C’s everywhere else) but I tend to do extremely well on standardized tests (34 ACT on the first try) so my records are kind of inconsistent. When I went back to school I had to seriously rethink the way I looked at learning. Glad to hear I’m not the only one.
