I am currently living in seoul, south korea. im originally from Atlanta, Georgia where my public high school averages around 1500 on the Sat a year. So when i moved to korea I was surprised to hear the average Sat scores that these students make.
There are several things that you must know about these students.
Not all korean students take the SAT. They must be fluent in english to take this test.
So the fact that many of these students can speak 2 languages fluently gives you some idea that these students are along the top students in the country.
The school that was mentioned is in fact one of the top schools in the country. i have a friend that goes to this school and we were discussing the courses that she takes currently as a senior and she was basically taking courses that are taken during college.
She told me that these classes were the basic courses that her school offers. So on average only the Top Bilingual students in korea can join this school.
these students were scoring around 2203 on average, but also know that the average international schools in korea score around 1850 on the SAT, which is not bad at all.
But why do these kids do so well?
KOREAN PARENTS ARE CRAZY.
Korean parents train their kids into academic machines. The parents will spend over half of their life salary to pay for tutoring and the best schooling in the country. The parents spare no expense in there childrens education. they expect so much from their children.
Korea had to pass a law in the past few years that it made it illegal for the academies to teach a lesson after midnight, but many students will stay at their academies doing self studies into the early hours of the morning. they are a truly determined race of people.
while they achieve highly on the SAT and other academics there are certain drawbacks.
Sadly, korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. due to the fact that students make education their entire life. but what happens when you fail the system? basically they feel no reason to live.

So dont think that koreans are naturally smart. any race of people have the same capability to learn its just a matter of how hard they apply themselves.
and its true not all of the students take the SAT, but for the ones that do they achieve pretty high.
