Average/Slightly Above Students - Recent Acceptance Thread

JS, SAT scores in the 2000s or ACT scores in the 30s, is well above average…

Congrats to everyone that got into their dream colleges. This is such a nice thread, hope there’s one like this when I get my acceptance letters… or rejections as the case may be. :)

This reminds me of a thread I made a little while ago :stuck_out_tongue:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1376250-i-dont-think-im-smart-enough-go-top-college.html</a></p>

It is disheartening to hear of people who have extraordinary academic stats, but every college can’t have an entire population of 4.0 GPA/2400 SAT students. You never know until you try :D

I am pretty average compared to normal CC kids apparently! 1650 SAT, 25 ACT, 4.0 GPA. What’s weird is that at my school, these scores are considered really good! Haha. And so far I’ve been accepted (and invited to apply to the honors program) at CSU Fullerton. Currently waiting on UC’s (Berkeley, LA, Santa Cruz, San Diego, Irvine, Santa Barbara) And my other CSU’s (Long Beach and Cal Poly SLO) Also waiting for USC, my top reach! Good luck to all other average kids! Averagies unite!

3.01 unweighted, 3.7 weighted, 1640 SAT. 12 honors classes, 3 APs, 24 ACT, waiting to hear from WCU, University of South Carolina, UNCW, University of Tennessee Knoxville, may apply to Alabama. Anyone else in this range get accepted to any of these?

I’m a sophomore at Loyola New Orleans but I definitely fit into this category when I applied! 3.3 GPA, 31 ACT (superscored), received $17,000 a year from Loyola (so heads up all you Loyno acceptances, they are great at merit aid!). Good luck to all applying and congrats to all who have been accepted! Getting accepted to any college is a great accomplishment (and so is graduating High School), so y’all have already come really far!

If anyone has any questions specifically about Loyno, feel free to message me.

It’s really cool to see people applying to pretty much all the schools I’m applying to! lol I hope we all get in and good luck to everybody!

My transcript is a little all over the place, but I have a 3.4W and 1990. I’ve been accepted to Embry-Riddle, and probably Norwich (I hear back this week). I’ve also been accepted for the NROTC Navy Option scholarship, but all 5 of my choices (Embry as first) are full already so I will have to be wait listed. And my USNA application was completed today, so far it looks good but I guess I’ll find out in the next couple months. Good luck to everyone!

My son wasn’t in the just above average category, he was in the just below the exceptional students category, but we’re from a very small community, where he attended a very small high school (graduating class < 75), so I watched many of his friends and classmates grow over the years and cared very much about their futures as well.

Being a small high school, the school had only 1 AP class, last year only 10 students took that class, most of the students graduate with no AP courses, no honors courses, never take a calculus class, most don’t have 4 years of science (many don’t even take 3 years of science) and the school doesn’t even offer 4 years of social studies courses (there is no required or elective social studies course available during sophomore year).

The top 10-15 students fall into that ultra-competive group with high GPAs, lots of ECs, and above average test scores (but many of those don’t score >30 ACT and perfect scores even on a single section of the SAT or ACT are rare enough that the stories get published in the local news). Most of the students fall into the average - below average category.

Few of the students even consider venturing outside of the state and most of the top students head to one of the flagships - Indiana U or Purdue (we’re pretty evenly divided) or to an in-state private such as Rose-Hulman or Butler. Some of the average students go to the flagships as well, but many of the average to below average students go to smaller publics such as Indiana State in Terre Haute or University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. Some go to regional campuses such as Indiana U - Kokomo, Purdue - Calumet, or Indiana U-Purdue U Ft Wayne. A few go to Vincennes - primarily a 2 year college, either because they only plan on puruing an Associate’s or so they can later transfer to one of the flagships. And a few go to a technical school, but of those I know, that’s not because they couldn’t get into another school, but because they really wanted to pursue a degree in something like radiology.

Of all the students I know, they are all extremely happy with where they have wound up. Most students who have struggled in high school aren’t looking to go to a hyper-competitive college where they can’t compete, but are happy to go to a school where they will fit in…where they will be challenged, but won’t wind up drowning.

Even the students with the 2.x GPAs and the 18-22 ACTs who wanted to go on to college are now at a school. For those students that have struggled in high school, for those students that have average GPAs or test scores, if you want to go on to pursue a higher education, there is a school out there where you will find your fit. Never feel discouraged and never give up on yourself or your future.

This is a great thread. Thank you to all you are posting info. I work with students and it is tough on the 3.2 student with picking colleges so this thread will be very helpful.

@Hurricane13, you probably won’t get waitlisted but will have your scholarship placed at a school that was not in your top five (UCLA usually gets a lot of these kids). I would call Embry-Riddle ROTC and let them know that you have been accepted to the school but that there was no more room in the unit even though you got on scholarship. Maybe they can help?
