I had a 3.6 un weighted gpa, 4.2 weighted

Here were are list of my acceptances

University of Maryland

Salisbury University
Northeastern University
Boston University

I just joined CC and this is the first thread I wasn’t too intimidated to post on. Obviously “average” is subjective, I’d say I’m above average but not a star (3.8 gpa, 1900 SAT, 28 ACT). I applied to Fordham University (my first choice and biggest reach), Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University, Seton Hall University, Manhattan College, and UMass-Amherst. So far I’ve only heard back from Seton Hall and I was accepted with $22,500 per year in merit aid. Anyone else apply to any of these schools?

I’d say I’m slightly above average. I have good grades and good test scores, but because of troubles with online school it will have taken me 6 years to actually graduate high school. I also ride horses full time (although not so much anymore since I went back to traditional school so I can actually graduate). So I haven’t been involved in any school clubs.

At my current school I have a 4.0 UW, but it’s probably not the most accurate reflection of my entire high school career. My current school does not offers APs or Honors classes; we have U(university), M(mixed), C(college), and O(open) level. U being the hardest, O being the easiest. I have taken all the toughest courses.

I was rejected from Northwestern ED.

Waiting on:
University of Chicago EA
SUNY Binghamton
Marist College
Marquette
University of Maine

Edit: Oh and I have a 31 composite on the ACT

My daughter has your GPA as an unweighted GPA but 2280 for SATs and ok ECs - no sports, no robotics, no student government, just music and theater plus some volunteer activities. So far, rejected by Cornell, accepted by Rutgers. Waiting to hear from U. Chicago, which is another reach. Have yet to apply to U. Rochester, Haverford, Notre Dame, UNC-CH.

By CC standards I am very much an average student, but I’d argue that those standards are unbelievably high, haha. So far I’ve been accepted at East Tennessee State, University of Tennessee, UAB, Berry College, and Mercer University. I am still awaiting Morehouse College and Oxford College of Emory’s letters.

My son had a 3.2 (UW) GPA from a public school with a rigorous schedule of honors courses in math and science in 9/10 grade. AP courses in math, science ( chem/physics) and history ( APUSH/Gov) in 11/12 grade.
ACT: 30
SAT 2 Bio: 650. SAT2 Chem: 630
Was admitted ED to Skidmore.

I mean there is no such thing as an “normal CCer” when you think about it. This is a forum designated to discuss college/academic related topics. Students with sub-par stats have just as much a right to discuss here as the 2400/4.0 student. It just turns out that average level students are an anamoly on this site simply because on average only extremely driven/high achieving students would spend extra time discussing academics. I laude you for not being afraid to post your stats (which aren’t even bad) on a forum like this. But you dont need to make a point of your average statistics. Just do your thing and no holier than thou academic god will smite you. Attracting attention to a topic that does not deserve to be recognized such as “normality” is unnecessary. Again, post regularly, be proud of your achievements, and don’t be afraid of the weirdo’s of CC. I’m no genius. I do claim a 3.99 gpa (yes…my luck is terrible) and 35 ACT. But I would not under value your opinion knowing you have a 3.5 and <2000/30.

3.6 weighted/3.33 unweighted. 30 ACT.
Deferred at university of Michigan and university of Illinois at Urbana champaign.
Accepted to university of Iowa and indiana university.
Waiting on Tulane, Wisconsin-Madison, Maryland- College Park, university of Miami coral gables, Miami university-Oxford and American university. Predictions? Suggestions?

3.4 uw, due to medical issues.
1980 SAT, 2020 superscore
Mix of honors, IB, and Running Start (college classes for HS credit)
Good ECs & very good essays
URM

I didn’t really apply to any reach schools, I think. Mostly high matches & safeties cause I need a lot of financial aid.

Accepted to:
Washington State University
University of Idaho
Northern Arizona University
Pacific Union College

Waiting on:
San Diego State (not getting in from OOS. lol I don’t know why I applied.) Humboldt

Still have to apply to Western Washington, and either Oregon State or U of O… Not sure.

Often College Confidential makes me puke with parents posting their 4.4s. I am a therapist and I can tell you that, in life, grades mean nothing. Anyway, my student is a weighted 2.9, 22 ACT drama student, so much rides on the audition. So far has gotten into Baldwin-Wallace, and Kansas State. Waiting on Emerson, Oberlin, Univ of Wa, Univ of Minn, Cal Arts, UCLA (really really a stretch), Cornish and DePaul…we shall see.

Son has a 3.37w, SAT 1780. He is applying for Mech Engineering.

He has applied to RIT , UConn, UMass Amherst, UMass Lowell, UNH, URI, Roger Williams and Western New England U.

RIT is a long shot, his gpa is not high enough. When we went for an interview, the admissions counselor was steering him towards Mech Eng Tech (the qualifications are not as strict) so we knew that was a bad sign! We shall see.

We have not heard from anywhere yet. He applied EA to everywhere but RIT and UConn.

I’ve already gotten into colleges, but it’s intimidating when someone with a 3.8 UW, 4.3W and 2100+ SAT makes a post saying “TERRIBLE grades. Will I get in anywhere?!” as happens far too often on this site. TBH, if I had known about CC before I applied, I would have thought the only places I could get in were my local commuter school and maybe Kansas State, since I was competing against the likes of those people.

For a fun activity, on the college search and selection forum, compare the number of people with less than a 3.6W and a 1900 SAT and greater than a 4.0W and 2100 SAT. It’s not even close. Sure we have the right to express our opinions, but when people who haven’t yet applied to schools see kids on the chance me subforum crying that they won’t get in anywhere with scores that put them in the top 2% of the population, that’s intimidating, and acts as a deterrent for regular students from using this forum.

Even with that post, I acknowledge I wasn’t a “normal” applicant. I had about a 3.3W GPA, but a 30ACT and all 5s on my AP tests. Even so, I compared myself to my friends who were all Berkely, UCSD, or Ivy bound, and I thought I wouldn’t get in anywhere, so I applied to a ton of schools with free apps.

Love this thread. It is way too easy to get caught up in the “keepin’ up with the Joneses” mentality and to think it is all about the name/prestige of a college or where your friends are going. I encourage all students (and parents!) to look for a school that is the right fit for the student, regardless of pre-conceived notions.

If you find the right fit, by definition, every student is about average at the college they attend.

I went to a tough engineering school, and believe me, it was a shock for many of the students to arrive and find out they were average or below average in the college population. Many, like me, hadn’t developed good study habits in high school. If I worked hard, I could get an “A”, but if I didn’t work hard, I’d get a “B” or “C”, and if I blew off a class, I’d get a “D” or have to drop it for fear of failing out. Sounds pretty “average” doesn’t it!

I’d also encourage people not to be obsessed with “reach schools”. Sometimes it is better to shine in a school that isn’t as high pressure. A sibling of mine went to a great school, even though it wasn’t his first choice. He did great there, and it has paid dividends in his career ever since.

So be careful what you wish for. If the reach school is not for you, you’ll be happier at a place where you fit.

I’ve heard great things about some of the schools listed here, including Juniata.

My son has an unweighted GPA of 3.4 but has AP and Honors courses that some schools will factor in. 1700 SAT. Varsity sport, decent EC’s including a leadership position, volunteer and work experience. He has been accepted so far at SUNY Oneonta. He is waiting to hear from UMass Amherst, University of Delaware, UConn, SUNY Oswego, SUNY Stonybrook, Hofstra & Quinnipiac. His first choice is UMass Amherst, but if he gets into Stonybrook we will give that one a much closer look.

My older son was a little “less than average” according to CC standards and he is a very successful junior at SUNY Oswego majoring in Physics. He was not a high school overachiever but has excelled and matured in college and is looking forward to a prestigious internship this summer and applying to some great graduate schools. High school doesn’t always define your future success. Life will not be over if you have to go to your safety school.

I had a 3.77 GPA and 32 ACT, and was accepted Early Decision to Williams College, in Massachusetts. For those who do not know, it is the #1 liberal arts college in the nation. I plan on majoring in Astrophysics and Anthropology.

Hey I’m average

University of South Alabama

I have gotten scholarship offers from these schools totaling up to $350,000.
