The buttom line is that they look for very smart people who genuinely want to go into medicine. you don't have to be a superman. for example, i probably had the lowest sat score among the ppl. here (1340), but my act was 33 and i got a 3 800's on sat 2 subject tests and 2 other relatively good sat 2 scores. also, i moved to the U.S. 3.5 years ago, and i volunteer in a hospital's ER, and other stuff...
THE BUTTOM LINE: there is no single formula for admission, and no set of test score numbers and/or EC's is a guarantee--and that's how it's supposed to be.
we are all smart, so i think the best thing for someone who wants to get in next year is to utilize his or her energy to activities they enjoy and are trully passionate about, and be honest in their essay and interview.

well said parparblue. you DON'T have to be a superman. although I have higher scores than parparblue, I probably have the least hospital experience out of everybody - I just volunteered and worked at hospitals for one summer. However, I was able to maximize that experience and express my passion about medicine. I'm glad they don't have a single formula for admissions, because one single factor, whether it be test scores or extracurricular activities or whatever, does not define a person. It's the whole package. parparblue said it well: be honest in your essay and interview. Just be yourself - don't say what you think they want to hear. If you want more tips, you can email me and I'd be happy to help you, as I'm sure any other HPME person on this board would.

CONGRATS neo, mea, and parparblue!!!!!!!!!
wow i really wish that im gonna be in your situation 2 years from now
as i said earlier i would choose HPME over any ivy league or top college and its my dream school
i think i can excell in everything except my test scores which i realllllly have to work hard at
i got a horrible psat as a sophmore this year and im gonna do a bunch of SAT prep books over the summer and hoping to get atleast a 220+ PSAT and 2200+ SAT and 32+ ACT
i prolly did horrible because i didnt prep or review math formulas and postulates (geometry) and i know i can do a 100 times better if i practiced the test and establish a good pace so i can reach my goal scores
i know i can do better because i am in the top 5% of my grade in a very competative private high school
SAT IIs and APs i can handle alot better
im really hoping i will make it in
ill be flipping in the air if i make it

Wow, I just discovered this College Confidential thing, and, after reading all this, I gotta say that I had things real easy. I'm a pretty stressed person, but I feel like I'm just taking a stroll in the park compared to you guys. (No SAT/ACT prep, didn't even learn about HPME until senior year...) Maybe it's just because I'm in Wisco. Talk about having somebody always better/worse, more/less stressed, more/less motivated than you. Ain't that how the world works?

I gotta say for everyone who's freakin' out though, RELAX. Someone's worth and their ability to succeed cannot be determined by the time they're 17. Frankly, if you are worried about success right now it's a pretty good sign that you'll do just fine in life. Doesn't matter if HPME accepts you or not (and what pressure your parents put on you), you're obviously determined and will succeed no matter what school you go to. (Wow, wasn't that philosophical? It's the type of stuff I always resented hearing, but, I gotta admit, it's true :) )

hehe melly it's true.

Congrats on your acceptance!!!

Thanks much!
