Hey guys. I read on some thread on here a while back that if you participate in a group and that group wins an award, you can write that award on your application.

Is that true? And if so, how do you word it? "Part of a group that won such and such..."?

Sure, a team or group award is still an award. There are some very prestigious academic competitions that are only for groups; individuals rarely or never participate. Think about robotics or engineering project competitions, quiz bowls, etc.

In explaining it, if it's not a no-brainer (if you are on the football team and it wins the state championship, most people know it's not one against eleven), then state the facts: "Winner, first place, TriState Robotics Competition: member of 4-person team that designed, constructed, and controlled a fire-fighting robot against 250 teams from Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire." Something like that.
