B in Financial Accounting... How will this affect me for Berkeley Haas?

It's my first semester at California Community College. I'm set for getting A's in all my classes... except for Financial Accounting!! I'm taking 18 units right now and Financial Accounting is worth 5 units.. ugh !! I'm pretty sure a B is the best I can do at this point. Why does it have to be worth that many units! What should I do? Am I going to be able to explain to admissions about my B? I don't know if taking full units this semester or the fact that it's an online class are valid reasons or not.

Should I take some extra units (I only need to take about 12-13 units per semester after this semester to fulfill all of my pre-reqs and breadth) to boost my GPA up? Or will these extra courses be looked at as superfluous if I already completed everything that I need?

I have some extracurriculars but I don't know if they're considered out of the ordinary or not. I'm in a politically-related internship, secretary of one club, president of another. (both clubs are business related) I'm interested in consulting as a career... any ideas on good extracurricular activites for that?

It’s a B. It is not the end of the world. There is no need for explanation. Just focus on the rest of your courses and ECs and the rest will fall into place.

To be honest, You better get straight A’s from here on out. If anyone disagrees please feel free to argue your point.

It’s your first semester man, too early to predict your outcomes lol.

I agree with billionaire
And what’s up with those ECs, you better step it up man!

Yeah It’s his first semester, but he only gets three of them along with one summer before they make a decision.

Wait billionaire, are you being serious ??

Call me biased, I’ve been in community college almost 4 years. XD

@collegeis4losers you almost had me crying inside!!

I will definitely try to step it up and get A’s from here on out. Hopefully it will be easier since I will be taking less units from here on out.

And I’m a girl btw!!

I got your pm and Sorry for freaking you out. Are you going for a one year transfer?

Nah, if I had been able to get summer classes at my CCC I might have been able to. But Berkeley’s Haas breadth requirement is just too much for me to cram into a year. I could’ve done it for UCLA but I didn’t want to rush my math (need 2 semesters of calculus, didn’t take it in high school).

I might apply to USC Marshall this year (I’ve done the part 1 app) as a sophomore transfer but I’m not even 100% sure if I would go if I was accepted or stay another year and try for Berkeley or UCLA. My chances at USC as a soph transfer are probably significantly lower now too with the B since I don’t have a lot of units under my belt yet. ;( My HS grades weren’t so great. I would definitely pick Haas over Marshall but being able to stay 3 years at USC and get more of the “college experience” is really appealing too.

And it’s ok!! My fault for being so stressed that I couldn’t tell what a joke was xD

Im totally serious. Heres why I said what I said:

 1. The class was 5 units… ouch.
 2. No more breadth requirements next year which means more people will be eligible for admission and more will apply including those strong applicants who could do either Econ or Business like myself. I sure as hell would have applied to Haas if there were no breadth cause of my 4.0.
 3. I estimate that you couldn’t get in with less than a 3.85 next year.
 4. You being a girl doesn’t matter. LOL

Oh, I only stated I was a girl because you guys were referring to me with a male pronoun. I sure as hell didn’t think it mattered lol.

Thank you for being honest. I’m really ****ed at myself for drastically lowering my chances within the first semester.

Oh well, I really didn’t know because Haas Berkeley is like on another planet compare to my major. Good luck with everything and I’m sorry its so competitive!

@Billionaire Would you suggest taking as many extra units as possible to get myself as close to a 4.0 as possible to make up for my B? or should I just finish all my breadth and do more extracurriculars?

18(fall), 4(winter), 13(spring), 3(summer), 12(fall), 3(winter), 12(spring)
= 65 units total
Best case scenario if I can get all A’s in everything else…
= 3.93 GPA

I could continue my Chinese or French or something and take some extra classes:
18, 7, 16, 6, 16, 6, 16
= 85 units total
And… apparently taking 20 extra units isn’t going to do much of a difference lol. I just calculated it and that would give me
= 3.94 GPA
if I got all A’s + that one B.

If it bothers you THAT much drop the damn class.

Well didn’t biting off a bit more than you could chew land you in this predicament? 18 units was alot to take your first semester. So definately do not take “extra” units to make up for it especially with Calc I and II coming up(Dont know how good u are in math). Work on EC’s (not at the expense of your grades) this next year and you should be a very attractive candidate even with the B. Join Berkeley TAP if you can because its an awesome program. The grade is just a setback but in the grand scheme of things, you should be ok if you get A’s from here on out and work hard along with having great EC’s.

Glad to help

P.S. I thought Fin. Acct. was cake. I took it in 5 weeks over summer.

You’ll survive. dont worry about the B.

do you need super good grades for haas if you get enrolled into berkley?
