B is for Bad?

As many CC members will no doubt be applying to top-tier schools (HYPS, MIT, other Ivies), I'm just wondering how do these school's adcoms view B's. Are they a huge disadvantage to your chances of being accepted?

I attend a difficult private school where I don't get all A's just because the classes are so much more difficult than at a public school (where I would most likely be earning straight A's without breaking too much of a sweat). However, these difficult classes teach me the material extremely well. My recent AP scores followed by what grade I received in the class for the second semester are as follows:

Calc BC- 5 (B+)
Physics B- 5 (B)
Chemistry 5 (A-)
French 5 (B+)
English 4 (B)

Does this ruin my chances at schools such as Stanford, WashU, and Rice?

stanford... not gonna happen because they recalculate gpa, so you'd just have 4 B's and an A...
The other two could happen depending on other scores/ECs
I think you'll get a bunch of negative responses saying that there's no way you're gonna get into WashU or Rice, but I think that if your school is as hard as you say it is (school profile will indicate this) then you should have a decent chance at both of them

It really does depend on where you go to school. If the Stanford admissions office know that your school grades harder AND has taken kids from your school with similar GPAs then you've got a shot. Otherwise, nope.

Again this depends on your school. If you send upwards of 20% of your class to Ivies, then I wouldn't worry about the grade deflation (my school sends 5-7% of the class to Yale EVERY year and we're nowhere near CT). But odds are your school isn't as competitive as you think it is.

It's all about rank, if you're the top of your class you have a chance no matter what the grades are at top schools. You can get screwed at state schools that go purely on GPA.

Hm, on the surface your grades don't look great. However, I would have to see the rest of your app before I pass judgement. I mean, and this is an extreme, if you had a 2400 SAT, 2400 SATII, and cured cancer....I wouldn't worry about your grades. It really depends on the rest of your app.

I agree with what others have said: it depends on the rest of your app, and your rank/if your school is really as hard as you say it is.

This is pretty irrelevant, but please don't look down upon public schools becaues you go to a private school. There are plenty of very difficult public schools that would probably be just as hard or even harder to get A's in.

That's right. Public schools are nice too.

You seem to be implying, or at least hoping that colleges should cut you a slack because you and your parents decided that you should attend a difficult private school.
Too bad.

If your class rank is in the top decile, you have a shot at any of those schools, given the rest of your application is up to par.

Don't give up on Stanford. I had two B's from a school with a fair bit of grade inflation, and I don't think it hurt me a bit. Four from a school without inflation shouldn't be too bad.

I don't think you'll have any problems. According to your stats you're in the top decile and have a 1520/2300 on the SAT. I mean, it's all a crap shoot (especially at top-tier schools), but you have a good chance.

Just remember to find some safeties that you'll be happy at.
