B-School Transfer Hopeful

Hey guys and girls,
I'm technically a Sophomore at UMass Amherst (15 credits first semester + 16 credits from HS). My first semester was Fall 2006, and this Fall is my second semester.

I'm pretty new here so I'm not sure I have all the acronyms and lingo down but here are my stats:

H.S. GPA: 2.5(+/-) (not sure because my HS never produced class ranking or GPA)
SAT: 1320/1600 or 2000/2400

Originally the SAT's + low GPA showed I was a ‘slacker’, but I’ve been working hard on getting grades to show that “upward slope”. My senior year was pretty good, and my first semester at UMass was even better. I had a 3.7 cumulative, (4.0 in my “major”), which means I was able to make deans list, and am now enrolled in the honors program.

On top of this I guess I can try and boast how I’m involved finance society, some cultural clubs, I am fluent in a language other than English and have taken 6-years of another language.

As I said I'm working on completing my second semester at UMass because last semester I was diagnosed with a tumor in my hip.. After my short hiatus, I’m back in school hoping to do even better than last semester. I'm really starting to get involved, but what I’m noticing is a lack of seriousness by kids in my classes. I originally came to UMass with the intent of getting good grades and transferring perhaps to one of my first-choices out of High School. All this time off from school made me think about transferring again and here is some of my reasoning:

-Biz School doesn’t really have that reputation yet to place kids into the field I want to get into (Finance/IBanking)
-So far classes aren’t very challenging
-Life outside of campus is practically non-existent
-Kids aren’t as ambitious and driven as the kids I grew up with

What I’d want is to either be closer to home, or further away. I don’t really like the feeling of being two hours into the middle of no-where.

Coming out of High-School I was really interested in B.U. and Babson, and recently I’ve been thinking about those two again.

Questions:
-NO B.S., what do we think of these two schools?
-What do we think of my chances of getting in?
-Are there any other schools you think I should look in to? Keep in mind: close to big city, good business program. Maybe a reach school.
I assume my chances of getting into NYU Stern or UMich Ross are close to zero but do you think I should wait with applications for Fall 2008 (because neither accept students for Spring semester)

I know this post is really long, I apologize. I look forward to hearing some of your opinions.

p.s.: don’t worry about hurting my feelings, I need some constructive criticism and I need someone to snap me into reality

Thanks in advance :)

I dont mean to ruin anything, but the kids I've met at BU arent exactly super ambitious or intellectual either. I would assume if anything, theyre minimally better than at UMass. It's a shame I didnt get into sports management at UMass. I wouldve gone.

Give Boston College a shot - you seem like a beautiful fit there.

Stern is a possilibity for you as long as the prerequisites are met. UMich has a 3% acceptance rate. That's how hard it is to get in.

Ever consider UNC? I know it's not near the city and what not, but it works as well. How about an economics program? Some of the top rated schools (generally top 25) supply amazing economics programs.

You are in a nearly identical situation as I was last year. Scarily similar. I underachieved in H.S., went to UMass, and decided to transfer after 2 years to a better undergraduate B-School for pretty much exactly the same reasons as you've stated. If you'd like me to share my experiences more, let me know (PM Me). You were in Finance Society? Funny. We probably know each other.

TheProfessor,

I would love to hear more. Is Stern really within reach? What things would i need to make sure to do over the next semester or so to make sure i get accepted? B.U. seemed like a good fit between the things I was interested in because I don't really know how tough it would be to get into BC. Apparently Carroll school is very good, and I wonder if being Jewish would make me more or less favorable to B.C., any thoughts?

As a Jew (and one at BU), I'd never go to a school like BC, but there are a few.
