UMass Transfer Chances?

Hello everybody,

I am a college sophomore applying to UMass Amherst for the Spring semester. I sent in my application in about mid-September, and I just recently got confirmation that they have received it. I am very worried about getting in, because I want to go there so badly. I absolutely love the vibe I get from the campus, there are lots of things to do, and everyone that I've met there so far is so friendly. The price is also very reasonable for me.

For some context, I am at the moment attending a local community college after transferring here the Spring semester of my freshman year. These are my stats:

HS (If it still matters. I have 25 college credits as of now)
GPA: 3.2 (unweighted), 3.4 (weighted)
SATs: 750 (CR), 640 (Math), 730 (Writing)
ACT: 29
AP: European History, US History, English Lit, Biology, Psychology
ECs: Band (I've played the clarinet since I was in 4th grade.), Environmental Conservation Club, History Club.

My first semester after high school, I was originally attending a small liberal arts school, but found that I was absolutely miserable there. I have always suffered from anxiety, and my first semester, I was hit particularly hard by depression. I could barely eat or sleep, and I was miserable; I even contemplated suicide one or two times. My GPA at the end of the semester ended up being a dismal 1.1.

I transferred back home and enrolled at my local CC. I began feeling and doing better, and managed to bring my GPA to a 2.85.

This semester, I am taking 16 credits, with a projected GPA of around 3.4-3.7. The application form had only an optional teacher recommendation, but I sent one in anyway, and it was very good, from a professor that I've had twice in a row now.

I know they want a cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 for transfers, so that's why I am freaking out kind of a lot over this. If anyone can help me, I would be extremely grateful. I plan on being either a Sociology or an English major, also, if that makes a difference.

with a 3.2 HS GPA and 2120 SATs I’m incredibly surprised you didn’t get into Amherst the first time around, did you apply? I’d say that a 2.85 should give you a good chance for a transfer though, but by no means is it a guarantee. Out of curiosity, what’s the CC? QCC? Framingham S? Worcester S?

I did apply as a freshman, however, I accidentally messed up some of the personal info on my application and the college never received it. :c

By CC, I meant community college. I haven’t attended any universities in-state. I am at Massasoit at the moment, embarrassingly enough.

Not embarrassing! But yeah I think you definitely stand a chance here. Off topic a bit: Did you apply to any other in state universities? (e.g. WPI?). Asking as a HS senior with similar stats to yours (3.1 and 2210) currently applying to schools.

I originally applied to University of Edinburgh, UNH, UMass Amherst, UConn, Suffolk, Salve Regina, and Stonehill. Since the application that I messed up was the CommonApp, I never heard back from half of them; however, I was accepted at UNH, Edinburgh, Suffolk, and Salve Regina. I don’t know how helpful that is to you, sorry. xP

your good man. I went through the same thing my first semester the adjustment period was rough for me as well. good to see your doing better and i think your in no problem.

Thanks so much for the reply. I am feeling much better about this whole thing. (:

Hmm I should probably go triple check my Common App now :P

Yeah, just make sure there are no typos or anything. It sucked so much when I realized what had happened. e.e
