Chances? (& Other Questions)

I am currently in my sophomore year at a local CC, and I am looking to transfer to UMass for the Spring. My freshman year, I spent my first semester at a tiny liberal arts college, and I was absolutely miserable. I am already prone to anxiety, and with all of the pressure at the school there, I went into a deep depression and my GPA ended up being absolutely abysmal at 1.1. I ended up transferring midyear to the CC I am currently at, and managed to improve somewhat, ending last semester with a 2.85 GPA.

This Fall, I am taking 16 credits, and at the moment, I am projecting my GPA to be somewhere around 3.4-3.7 midterm (should be all A's and B's). After speaking with an admissions counselor, I was told that having somewhere around a 3.5 GPA when they ask for my midterm grades would be about what they are looking for; however, I am incredibly worried still. I have heard that it is harder to transfer in the Spring, and when I see the other people I am competing with, I get extremely nervous. That is not to even mention that I will be considered behind students who are doing the MassTransfer. Would the upward trend in my GPA be enough for me to be seriously considered? I know that I messed up very badly last year. Also, I had pretty good grades in high school, and I scored 2120 on my SATs. Would they even look at those anymore? Or is mid-sophomore year too late to matter?

I already submitted my application last month, so now I am anxiously waiting to hear back from the college. There were some issues with the CommonApp this year, and I was told that they would be getting around to sending out emails at some point this week. I guess that is another one of my questions - has anyone else who is transferring heard back from them yet?

Sorry for this wall of text. If anyone takes the time to read all this, I greatly appreciate it. Also, if it means anything, I am considering either English or Anthropology as a major.

If you transfer less than 27 credits, UMass requires SAT scores. If you have more, will they still look at them? Don’t know. It can’t hurt that yours are really good.

UMass takes over 1000 transfer students a year. You have really turned things around for yourself, and I think you will have a pretty good chance.

I think the school is transfer friendly. They admit a large number of local CC students and have MA credit transfer policies set up for the CC to 4 year switch. Keep in mind that the more distance from your 1.1 semester you have, the more weight your most recent semesters will have.

Thanks for the answers, guys. Do you think that my cumulative GPA would be the most important thing in all of this? I was just going through some old threads in this forum, and I saw that someone a few years ago was in a similar situation as me and was rejected because his cumulative GPA was only a 2.6. It is only possible for me to bring up my cumulative GPA to a 2.7 if I get a 4.0 for the semester. I don’t know if that will even be possible for me, since I am taking a math class, which I am notoriously average at (I really have to try to scrape out a B there). Have either of you heard of anyone with a cumulative GPA lower than 2.7 get in at all?
