Babson: Anybody know anything about it?

Twice this week I’ve seen Babson mentioned as a leading school for entrepreneurial studies. Once in Cool Colleges, once in Newsweek. Previously I’ve never heard of Babson! Does anyone know anything about it? It sounds intriguing, being a liberal arts college with a strong business program.

Actually, there are two well-known stand alone business/liberal arts schools. One is Babson and the other is Bentley. Both are strong in Business related subjects and both have strong liberal arts too. In fact, Bentley allows their kids to take courses at nearby Brandeis. I am sure that Babson has affilations with other schools too.

Babson seems to be the clear cut winner for entrepreneural studies based on rankings and perception. While their other majors such as finance, accounting etc. isn't bad, it is believe that Bentley College has better programs in Finance and Accounting since Bentley started as a school for accounting and finance. I am sure others will differ from what I am stating.

Although both schools seem similar since they are stand alone schools of business, they have a VERY different culture. You should check out the various college forums about both schools.

If you check the forums, many kids feel that Babson tends to be very cut throat. Although many like the education that they are geting at Babson, they don't seem to over enjoy the college itself. Bentley, by contract, is more liked by students overall. You should, however, read the students review forums and other forums to form your own opinion.

Frankly, if you are thinking of majoring in business, accounting, management, finance, entrepreneurship, IS( from a business perspective), economics, computer information systems and some other programs, you won't go wrong with either school as long as you find the culture to your liking.

Both are small schools with Babson being smaller than even Bentley. Both have large, diverse international representation. Check out both schools.

By the way, Bentley also has a liberal arts major and a major in philosophy with a concentration in business ethics.Babson has a concentration in Rhetoric and American History.

Frankly, both a good schools for what they do. Babson is probably one step harder admission wise and is a bit better known. Bentley is not only good but is a very up and coming school as well. Check out both schools.

I have got into an honors program at Babson for Finance. And also an offer from Boston. I am confused. At Boston its not an honors course, but the college itsels is higher ranked. Any ideas?

Since you asked about BABSON not Bentley…

Babson is a business school, which incorporates 50% liberal arts into the curriculum. Babson also cross-registers with Brandeis, as well as Wellesley (excellent liberal arts) and Olin (engineering).

Babson is definitely a tough school, and the curriculum whips students into shape freshman year by throwing 30 classmates into a business. The professors are essentially “investors”, who guide the students through presentations, market research, finding suppliers, calculating pro forma income statements, etc… and give the group of 30 students $3000 to start the business of their choice. Students spend the year running the business and learning all the life lessons people don’t usually experience until they try it in real life.

The college itself is VERY enjoyable… there are minimum 20 events happening every day, over 100 clubs and organizations, on-campus pub, greek life, free giveaway tickets to sports games, and a culture where the voice of one students can make a change. But again, it is a very challenging school. Definitely not a place where you can get by without working hard…

Lastly, I don’t know where taxguy got the concentration info from, but Babson has an “Ethics, Philosophy and Culture” concentration too among many others: Concentrations

Any more questions feel free to ask!
