Our S would love to be a businessman. His top choices are Babson College (on a scholarship) vs. Berkeley. Berkeley seems to be a pretty strong school, but his older friends at UCB comment on its unfriendly cut throat environment, huge competition and almost impossibility to get to Haas Business School. Money is not an object.
Any suggestions and ideas will be appreciated.
I do not think you can find two schools more different that those!
Did he visit Babson and did he like it? Very small school, business only, unique curriculum. I can hardly see a student liking both Babson and Berkeley. What type of business is he looking for?
He is going to visit Babson this week. He’s been to Berkeley a few times. He wants to start his own business either in finances (I know, tough) or in some low tech. He is very good in sciences/tech but don’t like them.
Babson is good for entrepreneurship. But things to consider: 1) fit – does he want a small or huge school – are things like sports, Greek life etc. important? does he mind large lecture classes or prefer smaller classes where he knows his professors? 2) location - East or West coast? 3) difficulty of getting into Haas and what would the back-up plan be if not admitted to the b-school?
Babson is getting a lot of good press lately. It is adjacent to Olin and there may be some synergy of skills to be found. Money magazine named it #1. Of course Berkeley has an excellent reputation in many areas. Sorry to hear his friends are not finding the atmosphere as cordial as it should be.
@excanuck99 You are very helpful, but have not learned to pay attention. It might help learn reading. I have three gra degrees and don’t need any more. I was asking about my son, who wants to do business. I guess you must be really bitter with rejections?
I can read fine but it just isn’t that common for parents to be on these boards. They are for students. As for being bitter with rejections, I have had ONE. And I got into two Ivies. As for Babson is not in the same league as Berkeley and no one choses Babson over Cal.
