just out of curiosity...i keep seeing "what are my chances" and then replies such as "with good essays, yur in!"...what would it take if yur essays were really ****ty to get in from out of state?

it would take a miracle

bah, i dont see how thats fair at all, some people are horrible at writing, the way they put so much weight on it at schools forces me to have pity for people who cant express themselves on paper

well,,, if they know they are bad writers then they definitely should not come to carolina...just kidding lol....have other people proof your admissions essays!!

I think that schools, especially those as big as UNC which would get tons of applicants a year, would not "put so much weight on" essays. They simply don't have all that time to focus on each individual essay.

My essays weren't so "great" (well, they weren't "horrible" either)...but I got in from out-of-state.

As a general school, the bigger the applicant pool, the less weight is put on the essays. So they can be good, or above average, and you still have a shot.

That does not seem to be the case at carolina about the essays not being a focus.....the admissions people hire people specifically to handle essays and report their findings refletive to the whole application.?!!?!? but like the previous posting said if you are above average you have a shot.....but average for carolina is pretty high ! ! !

"but average for carolina is pretty high!!!" Are you referring to in-state average or out-of-state average?

And even considering that they hire people specifically to read essays, that's still a whole lot of essays. I think that an average/mediocre essay would not necessarily drag down an above average applicant...though a really good essay would definitely boost a not-so-good applicant. So it's win-win.

Trust me, I teach multiple sections of the Intro Geology Lab and some students here that are marked as communications or journalism majors definately can't write to save their lives. I've gotten many assignments with incomplete sentences and thoughts. I just hope you are willing to learn to write better in college, it really makes a difference when you can sell yourself as a wonderful individual that is the right person for the job (in your case..student!). Have lots of people proof your work, its an essential part of learning to write!
