Bad GPA, is studying for SATs worth it?

Hi everyone,

Okay, I have a bad GPA. My GPA is currently 3.0/4.0 and I am wondering if I should even bother with SATs. I got a 1550 on the June SATs, it was my first and I was sick with strep throat without getting any treatment.

Anyways, I am wondering if I should even bother with SATs. It's not like I have a chance at going to a prestigious college. The best I can do is a good CUNY or some B rated schools in New York City.

Thoughts on this? I'm really lost. I will be the first in my family to attend college in the US, me and my parents are immigrants from another country.

Thanks.

That’s not a “bad” gpa. And of course you should try the SATs again! do the best you can and make your parents proud!

If you are a Urm, pull your gpa up along with your SATS and have good ecs and write a great essay, you aren’t out of the leagues for prestigious colleges.

Then again, if you get a 2200+ on the sat and have some odd thing going on with you the prestige isn’t out of the water for you regardless of ethnicity.

Nobody knows what the big leagues accept when the time comes.

Yes, you should study. Bring that score up to par and you’ll be set, especially if you move your GPA score up a bit too.

Definitely study for them and try to bring your score up!

Regardless of your expectations for which college you’ll get into, a higher SAT score will make you competitive for programs like Baruch Honors and the Macaully Honors Program, which give you full rides.

I’m from new York city too, what Cuny are you interested in and I could tell you your shot in getting in.
But I would boost the SAT at least to a 1650~ and if you do you have a fair Shot at most of them

You deff can get into York college (cuny) it’s in queens; If you want to go there I don’t think you’d need to retake the sats

I honestly want to go to NYU Poly/Cooper Union. I’m currently a rising senior so raising my GPA doesn’t seem likely.

I think I’m screwed :(

Yeah unless you can pull a 2400 SAT or have like something else in your app that could boost it yeah pretty slim slim chances lol.

You could always transfer after 2 yesrs at a cc; 4 years of NYU debt would be a lot anyway :)

Definitely retake the SAT. I suggest doing a bunch of released exams. Try to raise your GPA your junior year. It’s not time to give up yet :)

My friend finished junior year with a 3.1 gpa, His satwas a 1750.

He used his summer time and the remainder of the year to bring his gpa to a 3.4 and his sat to a 2250. He got denied to Harvard, yale, princeton, darthmouth, University of penn and stanford and NYU and MIT…But he got accepted to Syracuse

Never never never give up.

You see it’s possible.

@madomdg Btw do they count mid year grades into your GPA? I thought they just looked at them? I’m apply to my schools EA though  only because I’m impatient to wait till april to know where im going

^^madogmgd, That hardly sounds like a hopeful story. . .

^ True but syracuse is still a good school

If you apply early, then you can’t send mid-year grades. They will want them if you decide to enroll though, to make sure you don’t slack.

EDIT: @AppleBeam: Syracuse University is an excellent school.

I plan on somehow sending my 1st marking period report card to the schools I’m applying too >:]; they come out right before Halloween so hopefully the schools won’t say no we can’t use that

True, I keep forgetting that most EA deadlines are around 11/1 - 11/15. I’m planning on getting these apps out by no later than 10/1.

I wanted to apply earlier too but sat results for OCT come out around the 20thish and as soon as I get my report card 25-26ish BOOM sending out. Lol
Good though the earlier the better

Since you a URM and first generation if you write an amazing essay schools like NYU are very possible.

According to standards, you are an average American on paper.

Hi,

What’s an URM?

I got to say that my EC aren’t that good. Will making websites and running blogs count as EC? For school service credit I tutored math kids.
