Bad Grade from a non-CCC

Hi guys, long story, I currently go to UW Madison as an out-of-state but my home state is in California. I originally chose UW Madison because I unfortunately did not get into a UC. UW Madison is a great school, but expensive as well, so I’m trying to transfer to UCSB/UC Davis/UCSC/UC Irvine/UCSD/SCU.

Here’s the issue though: my GPA is low (2.92) all because of a bad chem grade, my GPA could’ve been much higher if I didn’t take chem the entire year. I originally planned to do engineering/pharmacy, but now I am more interested in majoring math/statistics (I’m trying to get into the math/stat major when I try to transfer). However, the chem grade is really pulling down my GPA. I can try and see if I can get the grade removed. Or, should I retake the chem course and try to get a better grade?

How likely are my chances of transferring to a UC and which schools should I check out?

It depends on what the rules are for academic renewal at UW. It usually takes a year or two to do this if offered, so you might be better served retaking the courses.

Hmm… So I actually got a D for the chem course which is the only bad grade that I’ve gotten all year. I’m not sure if I want to retake it this semester, maybe next semester.

https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major can give you GPA ranges for UC transfer applicants, admits, and matriculants.

You may want to ask UC if repeating the course you earned a D in will result in grade replacement for GPA calculation purposes when applying as a transfer student (most of the UC web pages about repeated courses is about frosh applicants: https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/q-and-a/repeating/ ).

OK thanks a lot!

You can only repeat a class if you received a D or a lower.
