Hi guys... so I was wondering how a C in gym would affect me in going to Ivy Leagues... yes I know but Im extremely unfit and basically our grades were based on physical testings only (no participation and that stuff). I am in the high As in all the core academic subjects and I take IB and I dont wanna ruin all my hardwork becuz of some gym teacher who decided that everything was gonna be based on physical tests..... so how will colleges view my C???

I don’t think it will be a big problem. Most colleges really focus on the core subjects.

It will probably be P/F on your transcript.

@Anniebeats what is P/F?

Pass/ Fail

That could be a potentially hilarious essay topic! Milk it.

I think getting a C in gym will not hurt you at all.
Just a note though, your teacher is fair, other classes don’t give grades based solely on participation or effort, right?
Either way you’ll be fine. Even if it’s included in your gpa calculations as long as your class rank is good enough, colleges won’t take into account when they review your transcript and possibly recalculate your gpa.

@AnnieBeats schools have very different grading when it comes to gym. You can’t assume that it will probably be pass/fail on the transcript. Most schools that give you a grade in the class will put that grade on the transcript, otherwise they will just tell you you passed. The entire county that my high school was in did that.

@guineagirl96 Your county is hardly representative of the entire country. You just said that I can’t make my assumption because schools have very different grading systems. You proceeded to refute that by making an assumption based on one county out of 3,007 counties.

each school does it their own way. Mine’s puts it as a grade in the transcript but it’s not included in GPA calculations.

@anniebeats Actually, it isn’t fair that PE be graded on ability. Sure, if physical education, running, and sports were the main focuses of high school, that’d be fair. But they aren’t. Core subjects like foreign language, mathematics, and science are. PE is there to SUPPORT other academic learning.

And OP, no one will care.

As far as I know, and judging by the performance of their football teams, this will not be an issue at either Yale or Harvard. But the tailgate is always a good time!

To add to the discussion, my school graded PE on ability. Maybe I would consider it fair if we did anything during class to prep us for the physical examinations. Most PE teachers (at my school, at least) don’t know a thing about fitness.
