bad senior year 1st semester grades

How badly would getting a C+ in a college latin course affect my chances at SWarthmore if I have only a B+ in multivariable calculus, and everything else are A's for my first semester?

It probably wouldn't be much of an issue. Probably.

hmm, i really doubt something like that would make or break the decision. did it really change your rank or gpa at all?

Well it does drop my gpa by about 5 thousandths of a point, but I was more concerned with maybe the adcoms view of me slacking off or to negative trend in my grades from junior year to senior year. But my gpa is still over 3.8 unweighted.

Taking a college Latin class is itself impressive. A drop of 0.005 is nothing, I wouldn't worry about it. The adcoms are not that stats obsessed.

IMHO, it seems like Swat would evaluate those grades in the context of the difficulty of the courses. Getting lower (but still not bad) grades in difficult courses like multi-variable calculus and college Latin would probably still put you in a better position than getting A's in easier courses. The fact that you are taking such difficult courses counters the idea that you are slacking off.

thanks for asking this. my econ grade is wavering now and ah..

I sreuly hope so, I've never gotten a C for a semester before, so maybe I need to adapt. But I hope that they understand how hard it is for seniors to work in their last year of high school when the end seems so close.

yea econ is ap so college too.

its just ahh college apps and everything = so much work!

apfrench & apcalc at my school are SO HARD. im getting a B in both of them (got B's in them both quarter), as a final grade. I think my final gpa for first semester comes out to 3.71 (after exams). Not good enough for Swarthmore?

I hope they are because def. because

I got a b in french last year...

yeah and my physics grade

meestasi, don't worry. Last year I was in a very similar situation. I had a C+ in AP Calc and a B/B+ in AP Chem, and A's in everything else. I thought the C+ would keep me out of college. My class rank dropped down one, and my GPA was lowered slightly, but for Swarthmore and other LACs I don't think it had much of an impact on admissions. (I still got into Swat and others.)

The college will look at your whole app. Someone told me last year, "It would be stupid for them to reject you based only on your calculus grade, when you have other things going for you." I'm sure you, and sunnyd137 and carpe_diem1 also have other things going for you. No one's a perfect applicant... hope your "Why Swat" essay was stellar because they value that.

Best wishes! :)

Heh, thanks for the support. I think my essay was good. I talked about the freedoms that students enjoy and made references to an article in The New Yorker abotu swat students talking to people in Iraq about the situation there.
