Bad slacker. Chances at...

General: white, middle class male from NY. Good public HS in the suburbs. Senior (just finished junior year)

SAT 2260 (740M, 720CR, 800W)
SAT IIs: only taken Bio, 700. Planning to take Math IIC, American History, and maybe Lit in October
UW GPA ~3.6

Mostly challenging courses taken throughout HS with mostly decent but some mediocre grades; a few B's here and there. I did well this past year, though, and I have a tough courseload planned for next year. I doubt anyone cares to read all the classes I've taken. I've taken 4 AP classes so far and will have taken 9 by the time I graduate, with 4's and 5's on all the tests.

ECs: honestly, this is where I've slacked the most- it's not even worth making a list. I've had some participation in the Debate Team, which I suppose could be exaggerated. Some volunteer work (tutoring and fundraising) here and there, relatively uninvolved member of Key Club. I have, however, played viola since the third grade in school and extracurricular orchestras to some merit, though recently I haven't been practicing and certainly haven't achieved anything particularly commendable. No involvement in extracurricular sports.

Nothing too extraordinary in the way of awards; NHS, Principal's Honor Roll, Nat Merit possible semi-finalist, etc.

My essays will most likely be pretty good, as will my recommendations.

Chances at (i realize most of these are reaches): Stanford, Cornell, Columbia,NYU, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Emory?

Thanks!

emphasise that you're a slacker and you might get in, to make the student population is more diverse.

I was bored until I read that comment.lol

haha, same. thanks, I'll be sure to do that

dude all of those colleges are reaches. you're a dull candidate who not only has mediocre academics but one who had plenty of privilege and didn't even bother to engage himself outside of school. you'll be lucky if you get NYU.

yep, i think you're wrong about being dull though, i find myself very entertaining. thanks, though!

uh slacker??

with those SAT's i think hes in at NYU and Vanderbilt

yea.. dude no ECs man. ECs are very important for the ivies. I think your best chances are with NYU and GT. I think you should ED one of them. I'm not saying you have no chance in the ivies, but certainly chances are low.

yeah, I know that's my main problem. I admit I underexaggerated a bit.. I've got more than that, and I don't come off as a slacker when the list is completed, probably, but definitely not on-par with most of the schools' standards. Anyway, I really loved Cornell when I visited and was thinking I'd ED there... i suppose i could stick this in that forum, but for now what do you guys think my chances there are?

are you kidding about a good shot at georgetown? i hope you meant george washington.

Ur Not A Slacker!!!!!!!!!!!! U Have A 3.6 Gpa.................ur Just A Nerd Without Any Friends.....dont Call Urself A "slacker" Because Ur Not Cool Enough.........u Must Get Ur Ass Kicked All The Time

if you improve your ec's and all that jazz a lot itll look really good. you could emphasize improvement and how you changed. You still have time, take advantage of it especially in the summer. do something drastic like start some kind of club or program. start a slackers club.

Make yourself seem interesting on the application and you'll do fine. Schools care about ECs, but they are certainly far from make or break if you can make it appear that you are better than the average student. If you are more personable than "John Q. Boring" who was in Debate Team, Model UN, etc, etc, you'll come off as better.

alright, cool. I'm doing a lot this summer actually and I will have a lot more ECs in the spring of senior year, but I didn't think that would actually make a big difference.. especially for ED. I suppose emphasizing improvement would be good, I think I got all A+s/As Junior year so that could go along with some more extracurricular improvement. thanks again
