Bad Start?

Hi. Thank for taking the time to read this. So here’s the deal. I’m not a bad student but my grades say otherwise. I had a really bad start freshmen year and the first semester of sophomore year. However, my second semester of sophomore year and the entirety of junior year I had extremely good grades, and my cumulative GPA for second semester of sophomore year and junior year add up to 4.5 weighted, 4.0 unweighted. I scored 1580 on my SATs, 800 on 3 different subject tests, and 5’s on almost all my AP tests. I started a club at school, am in multiple clubs, have a leadership position in school, and one outside of school. For 2 years I’ve had an internship working in a lab and have helped with papers. My GPA is not very high but I have high test scores and extracurriculars. My dream college is Carnegie Mellon with seconds being any UC school. Have I completely ruined my chances with my GPA?

Are you in-state for California? You would need to calculate your UC GPA:

Well, what is your GPA?

You mentioned that in your Junior and Sophomore years, your UW GPA is 4.0 and W GPA 4.5, so forgive me but I have no idea what’s stressing you out that much (especially since you have perfect SAT 1 and SAT Subject Test Scores).

So, just to answer your question, you definitely did not ruin your chances, but keep up with the high grades.

My GPA for freshman year and the first semester of sophomore year together weighted is 3.7. @jinxorchestra

Okay, so if there’s a reason for that change, mention it in your application.

Having such an upward trend in your stats is going to weigh out positively. Just make sure that you don’t go down again and you’ll be in good shape.
