My son & I have finally found a compromise where he will be on-campus (his preferences) but have his own bedroom (my preference so he gets SOME sleep) in the Balcony style dorms. There'd be one suitemate with a shared bathroom. He prefers North side - so the FHK complex seems like a good fit. However, according to the website they don't offer tours of these dorms. The floorplan is great, but the photo makes it look REALLY old and rickety.

Anyone living there or know someone who is? Comparing this to Modular or Commons style - the price is just a tiny bit more than the others where you have to share with other people... so I'm guessing maybe they really ARE old and rickety?

they are old and rickety… Actually I think they were build in the early 60’s. they are in a good location for kids who have to travel to west campus.

FWIW - We visited on Aggieland Saturday in February and though we didn’t tour the balcony rooms, wew did see inside a couple of the study rooms. We were very unimpressed. We also struck up a conversation with someone who had lived in one of the rooms and were told that the furniture was bolted down and not able to be rearranged.

I wouldn’t worry so much about dorms. When I was there a looong time ago, I lived in one of the oldest, smallest dorms (dorm 1 on the quad). Girls only, hall bathrooms, etc. I loved it! I had the time of my life, all part of a great college experience that I can’t wait for my daughter to have.

Almost exclusively :), but mostly because we were surrounded by them and ate lunch with them. And you got use to the noise. It was actually probably quieter in the evenings and on the weekends.
My point was, when I saw my dorm, I thought I would hate it, but I ended up loving it!

Almost all the dorms here are old. I’d rather get a dorm in the Commons or Modular because they’re a little bigger (especially the Modular where it also has a private bathroom). :)

I am also thinking about staying in the FHK Complex or the Modular dorms. The modular dorms are about $1500 more for the year, is this amount worth it?
