How are the dorms in the FHK building? Are they calmer or more of the drinking/party type? What are the best dorms for non-honors pre-med students that are not everyday party people but do like to have fun on the weekends? Also are there specific dorms that are more conservative than others?

a good discussion on dorms with some current students participating would be awesome!

: )

i agree, that would be great

My son and I were talking to my daughter (a current student at A&M) about dorms today while filling out his housing application. She said generally Southside dorms are quieter, maybe more academic-minded?, more Greeks. The Northside dorms are more “Old Army”, more active with stuff going on, friendlier, rowdier. She had a friend who lived in FHK who said everybody there hung around smokin’ and dippin’ all the time (yikes!). She lived in the Commons last year and lives in a Northside modular this year. This was just her opinion.

I am a current student at A&M. I lived in Moore (a north side dorm) my first semester. It was very noisy and active. There will be students playing football, drinking, and smoking at 3 AM. Since, northside dorms are close to the north gate, this is where the party life is. So you will see a lot of people walking around and you will hear a lot of music.

If you want a quieter environment, then south side is the better choice. South side is a slow paced, non-party, academic area - quite different from north side. But don’t get me wrong, there are some fun things to do in the south side I guess (:p). Just FYI, just because you pick a south side dorm doesn’t mean you WILL get a south side dorm. I picked 3 of my top choices as south side, but ended up getting one in the north side. So just get ready for anything. Hope this helps.

So what are the “best” southside dorms

My friend lives in Mosher and it’s pretty nice there but its only for Engineer majors.
Also, Apelt is also pretty sweet. So basically, the more expensive, the better. The modular style dorms are the best ones.

I am confused. The southside is more academic and less noisy? Lechner, McFadden, and Clements are the honors dorms, and they are located on the northsi.de. It was my understanding that they were pretty quite. Am I wrong?

well the dorm itself is pretty quiet because every1 in the dorm wants to be academically successful (thats why they picked it), but the location is on the north side, so ur gonna be exposed to noise outside. Take me for example, I lived in Moore. There would be students running around, screaming, and making noise. There were also students who played ping pong with tennis rackets inside. In the honors dorms, these kinda activity would be minimal because these dorms try to promote studious students. The honors dorms are better if you want some peace when you’re studying inside. For me, I constantly had to go to the library.
