We are getting ready to leave for the Baldwin Wallace Audition Extravaganza, S auditions on Friday. Any helpful hints? Tips? Last minute things we should know? (PS I will be doing this for all schools so don't get sick of me, its really helpful LOL)

He has his 3 - 32 bar songs, one ballad, one uptempo and one of his choice which is another uptempo. His monologue runs right at 1 minute.

We didn't really unpack everything from the WSU trip so...music, plays, resumes and headshots still in the car.

I believe this one is a long day so I'll throw a few snacks in my bag. I think he gets his complete itinerary when he checks in so not sure exactly what time he auditions yet.

I am very very excited. Baldwin Wallace is my dream school. I wonder if Vicky Bussert needs the 45 year old, hasn't had her hair dyed lately, overweight, can't really sing but is a good mover type? LOL

I think as long as you’re a good mover you have a shot MTMajor!!! I think Elon or maybe Texas State are my dream schools, I could use some warmer weather, but I’m not much of a mover these days just an ex-ballerina and an excellent micro-manager.

Break a leg to your son on Friday!

Hey, if YOU get in, Vicky will have you singing, dancing and acting your butt off!!! From what I’ve read, she’s just THAT good!! LOLOL

Despite growing up in Ohio, I had never heard of Baldwin-Wallace until I stumbled up CC. Why is it so good? Why is it popular?

Honestly, I don’t know that it’s that popular, but Victoria Bussert came to the school some years ago as head of MT and whipped it into shape and put it on the map. She can boast that everyone in the 2012 class was employed shortly after graduation.

From what I’ve read about her in online articles, she is truly a mentor to her students and seems to genuinely care about each and every one of them. Yet, she doesn’t go easy on them.

The friendly/supportive vibe hits you from the moment you apply. Lots of communication, the admission counselor is very responsive and always upbeat/positive. Every person you come in contact with at BW is overwhelmingly positive. As opposed to some of the other schools where all he’s received thus far is the canned “thank you for your interest email”

Vicky and team are producing students that can dance with the best of them. S started out wanting to be a dancer, so dance is close to my heart. I personally love the “ballet” boot camp added to the program (corse I don’t have to take this class so its easy for me to say LOL) All MT majors must take ballet at 7:30 AM (3 days per week I believe) but they can opt to take it every day.

Youtube BW’s senior showcase - the talent coming out of this school is amazing. I’ve watched last year’s finale about 4 times.

Its a BM Conservatory program, I like the emphasis on Music.

At auditions prospective students are assigned a current student to help them get from place to place, to answer questions and to generally support their “new little buddy” throughout the day. Love this too.

MTMajorCook,
Our info is a bit dated, our oldest auditioned there in fall '05. It’s a great school with excellent training. Our son had a chance to sit in on a master class with an original Broadway alum of Company and we then saw the school’s production - excellent!

The audition back then involved an optional piano test. Our son declined to do that. He’d studied up, but just didn’t feel up to par on the testing. I really think it was simply for placement. I would recommend, if it’s still an option, your child should go for it. Since theirs is a Music oriented degree, I believe they want to see kids passionate about the music end of the degree.

It was a great day. Enjoy yourselves and tell him to break a leg!

Thanks abparent - I don’t think the skills test are optional anymore. I told my S they were for placement so try not to be too stressed, he said “O mom, don’t you worry I will manage to peck out a song on that piano”. I guess that’s passion lol

I know this is a musical theater thread … but can any of you offer insight on how dominant MT is compared to other majors? In other words, would an absolutely non-artsy computer geek boy be happy there? They have a networking major that I think would interest my S, but everything I read on CC talks only about the MT program.

MTMAJORCOOK…is it true about them having a student helper for the day? I would love to pass that info on to D for Saturday’s audition day. You hit the nail on the head with the comments about the helpful staff in both the admission and conservatory office. I have called various times over the past few months, and have always had prompt friendly responses. If someone didn’t have the answer, they found someone who did. D is looking forward to a wonderful (cold) weekend.

Frazzled - WE will be there Saturday too!! I hope we meet up!

Hey there Kategrizz!!! I won’t be there Sat. …but D and her father will. It is her first on campus audition and I have to miss it. Obviously this is harder on me than on her! I will be present for everything else, so hopefully we will catch each other. You will be at Chicago right? Anyway, D flies out tomorrow am to upstate NY where her father lives, then they will drive to Cleveland Friday afternoon. Lol…I just now saw your post on Facebook. I am going over there to chat…see you soon!

Frazzled - well this is what I’ve read a few times but now I can’t find where I read it! Its going up to 60 on Saturday, so she shouldn’t be to too frozen!

Found it!
2010-2011 audition day in the BW forum:

A lovely thing that BW does is to have a current student to be with them during part of the day, to answer questions, make sure they get into a practice room to warm up, and keep them company in the hallway before their audition. That student then walks into the room with them, introduces them, and cheers for their audition after it’s over. She really, really, really appreciated that.

Frazzled35-when we toured there last year they did mention that they have a student with them for part of the day. Our tour guide mentioned it as well

I’m a year behind all of you in this process, so you all are providing me with priceless information as I follow you all on CC! My daughter is really interested in BW, we found their YouTube series called “Stages”. There are about 25 episodes that are about 10 min long each. It follows an MT class from their freshman year to their senior year. If you haven’t watched it yet, it is a great promotion to their program. Awesome to see their faculty and students in action! Wish all of the other programs had something like that!

MTRaleighmom… I have a junior as well. I just discovered the BW vids on YouTube. So impressive! When my S gets a few minutes, they will be compulsory viewing. Not sure when that will be… Performing in “The Princess & the Pea” this weekend, show choir concert next weekend, just got cast in “Twelfth Night.” Ahh! I am so thankful for the advance scouting & audition reports from the HS class of 2014 parents!

Well gotta tell ya, its as adorable here as I thought it would be. Cutest college town, its picturesque. A few weeks ago before the fall leaves fell I bet it was so beautiful. College town, right outside a larger city. Lots of stuff within walking distance, there are bikes everywhere. Carousel tonight, in the round.

YES I just discovered Stages and it made me think of the program in a completely different way. I was really wary of BMs at first because I believe acting should always come first and I want to be able to be employed in straight or musical theatre, but the inside look at BW changed my mind. The main thing that struck me was how every student’s individuality is embraced. Stages is definitely worth watching!

(Hey, I’m also in Twelfth Night right now! Our first rehearsal was today!)

Mamaduck - From our drive around today it looks like a pretty big university, the Conservatory of music is off a few blocks sorta by itself. I don’t see why a non-artsy person would not be happy here but I think it depends on the type of school he’s looking for. This is a college town, not urban but close to the city. I would think its worth checking out. I can ask a few questions for you tomorrow if I get a chance just let me know.
