Bama sorority recruitment video?

By some measure that doesn’t include being national champions

The first didn’t show them doing much because it was mostly a compilation of selfies, but the video interviews told us plenty about why they women joined the sorority-support (and yes, they mention academics), fun, sisterhood, a built in group of friends. Some of the video is pretty fluffy but it still show the girls at charity and sports events, traveling, hiking and jet skiing. It also mentions that they earned the Award of Excellence, awarded for high achievement in scholarship and in 12 years have raised over $8 million with 500,000 hours of community service for the Make a Wish Foundation.

Because they tell us they value intelligence. If you look closely there are multiple shot of the girls at charity events.

"We struttin round campus
Guys be like ‘Damn they be models’
We got Dance Marathon killaz
Savin the world like marvels
How our athletes so bomb
and then their brains is colossal
Flaunting that Klass
then go insane!
Rep your letters chick
it’s Kappa fame

…Sports, arts, dance, philanthropy,
no matter what these Kappas shine"

Accompanied by the appropriate visuals-girls on sports teams, at an arts event, finishing a walkathon, in a marching band, playing the violin, snowboarding, in Red Square.

There are certainly black and/or biracial women in the Stanford video and women of varying body types as well as tall slim blondes.

I only looked at a few videos so I’m sure there are better, but I thought he Stanford one was great. Not taking themselves too seriously but still getting across why someone should want to join.

I thought both videos were fine, but nothing about what they said or depicted as far as activities distinguished them from any other house. Every house, especially those with 300+ members is of course going to be composed of women who do lots of different things; it becomes superfluous to even go there and perhaps that is why the Alpha Phis didn’t bother.

The Kappa video was too long for me and not creative at all. The Stanford women did a cute video, but I don’t think my Ds would go for a house where the women chose to wear backwards baseball caps when deciding on how to put their best foot forward. There is nothing wrong with backwards baseball caps, but it is not something they would do. There was lots of gyrating and jiggling by the Stanford women, but that was totally fine with me and depicts what social dancing looks like nowadays.

Of the videos Sue posted, I most enjoyed the middle one. I sparked to how it opened with one girl drinking tea quietly as she began her day, and showed members in individual pursuits or small groups. Leaving aside the “male gaze” thing, what struck me about the Alpha Phi Alabama video was that it was geared towards friendship as defined by extroverts - surrounded by 50 of your closest friends at all times, constantly clapping, singing, etc. As an introvert, that strikes me as one of the circles of hell :-). I wonder if some houses and/ or schools have more of an extrovert culture vs a blend of both introvert and extrovert. I was an Alpha Phi but I certainly didn’t have 50 people around me at all times, and did a lot of stuff in much smaller friendship groups within.

I think some of the groups are growing really fast, and it’s difficult for those of us who were in houses of 50 or 75 total to understand these huge houses of 300+. Of course they don’t all hang out together all the time. They don’t even all eat together as there isn’t enough room to all sit in the same dining room. The Alpha Phi house is new at Alabama, only opened in 2014, and it only sleeps 72, which isn’t even the pledge class from last year. I don’t know where all the others live.

@higheredmom, I’m not disagreeing with you or @Joblue that the video achieved what it set out to do, which was recruit a new class of women. But at the same time, it had unintended consequences for both their sorority and UA.

As I said, Greek life isn’t my thing, but I bear no ill will towards that sorority and wish those girls well. I certainly don’t think they deserve all the acrimony they’ve received here, but I also don’t blame UA administration for feeling they had to make that statement.

The Animal House scene that the recruitment video reminded me of is the one where Bluto is peeking into the sorority house window.

Whoa…53 pages…and still going strong…

Are you guys this passionate about other social issues? Because we’re almost at 800 posts, I would love to see your passion for abortion or racism or something.

There is no agreement among the posters on the topic of this video or sororities at UA or other sorority videos. Many of us have opinions but they diverge! So the discussion continued but it seems to be dying down with.

I don’t believe we are really allowed to debate abortion on this board.

And if we were allowed to debate it here I bet all our pre-conceptions of what other posters think would be blown to smithereens!

Even I’m tired of this topic now. I’ve moved on to vocal fry.

@aeromom, you might want to contribute your astute observations to the “Why is this a thread?” thread.

@IvyGreekLife, yes, we are. And also handbags and wedding attire. Next question?

@IvyGreekLife for some this IS a discussion about racism.

This thread reminds me of the old Pantene shampoo ad, and the Keri Hilson song, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.”

The girls in that video are not particularly beautiful to me. No reason to hate them though.

I don’t remember you hating on them oldmom

I always hated that ad. What an insult to other women.

I think that such accusations say more about the accuser and their values and habits of mind than about anything else.
