Whos applying? Can anyone from last year tell me how they usually chose? Based on the responses, community service, LOR? How much impact will the leader of recommendation be?

Didn’t apply myself, but thinking about applying to the Long Island market this year. Some people had between 400 and 600+ volunteer hours! And some people with that many didn’t get in, so I’m hoping they’re not looking for numbers, but reading the essay questions and seeing what you’re doing, not how much.

Spend a lot of time on your essays.

How do you know what market your in?

&&Can you request a type of non-profit? For example say I would like to work for an environmental non-profit, or do they pick it at random?

Applied last year and made it to the final decision round and was ultimately rejected. Not sure how they know since there is no interview for my market but all but one student was “of color.” They seem to really like diversity.

^^ are you applying this year again?

Yay im an URM, although that really isnt fair if you were more qualified than the other students, maybe you’ll get in this year! :)

I’m applying this year too! I’ve been looking at similar threads and reading about the program and it sounds awesome. I’m in the Long Island market by the way and I hope I get in! :)

I may apply again. The pay is so good!

@Mewdrewes- how do you know your in the Long Island market? I’m a New Yorker as well, does that mean I’m in the Long Island Market?

@ raiderade- how much do they pay? I don’t really care for the pay, actually, I prefer to volunteer than get paid!

$5,000. It’s a TON of money for a summer job.

i live in long island so i thought i would be in the long island market.

Hey guys! I did this last year, and it was hands-down one of the best things I’ve ever done. The internships differ, so I think that a lot of people did work for camps etc - like hands on stuff with kids, but others of us (at least, the London market!) worked in offices.

The pay is great, plus you get paid for the entire week you’re in Washington.

As for applying, each selection panel differs, but do make an effort with writing your answers. They’re looking for people who really care about the community (this is shown through community work. Hours don’t necessarily matter, but I think commitment and involvement do), and are inspirational. They’re looking for you to have a passion to make a change.

My advice - go for it!

@ beelondon: You make me so excited to apply !

I have a true passion for helping others, and working for a non-profit would be such an amazing opportunity/ career ! I really hope I get in… but first I must finish my college apps >.<

Hey - i was thinking of applying too, and I also found this really cool nonprofit organization that i really want to work for – is there anyway i can suggest to bank of america that i want to work there?

@mdh625 I’m glad!

@venacava3 Unfortunately not really. The charities are usually chosen beforehand (some have been working in partnership with BoA for years), and a representative from the charity is often on the panel for selecting Student Leaders from that area.

For all of you curious about the programme, there’s a video up on youtube here: [YouTube - Bank of America Student Leaders](<a href=“Bank of America Student Leaders - YouTube”>Bank of America Student Leaders - YouTube) … not sure how long it will be up, due to copyright restrictions, it may have to come down… but it’s there for the meantime anyway!

Hi, I was wondering how prestigious is this program? Does it look good for colleges? What exactly do you do?

beelondon: thank you for the writing tips! I’m writing them right now

this opportunity sounds pretty awesome, I’m going to be biting my nails until May

@patriotsredsox37 I suggest that if you’re only doing this for college, you don’t. There are much more prestigious opportunities that you won’t be taking away a spot for someone who really cares (since there really are so very few spots). Sorry for jumping to conclusions, obviously I don’t know your level of interest, but I’m just putting that out there just in case.

From what I’ve gathered, you work for a non-profit and just learn how it is run. There is also a seminar in Washington

Mewdrewes: What writing tips? :o!

If you’re accepted for the program, do you have to commit for the entire eight weeks without break?

Specifically, if I have another commitment for three days during the month of July, can I still apply?
