Wow wait, not everyone starts nonprofits haha. I never organized a benefit concert and that sounds pretty fantastic. Definitely kudos to you. And there’s other internships other than Bank of America. Plus u might have not gotten it because it market was super competitive. It all depends. If its worth anything, I think u seem like a great candidate and I think u could get in next year if u applied

Haha well thanks. You’re too nice. Yes, I am applying to more, but I was so excited about the Bank of America internship. And now more essays…
I’ll definitely reapply though!
Thanks for the help.

Who geta need first? The people who are accepted or rejected?

I meant to say “Who gets news first?”

April 19th ( tomorrow) is the deadline for registering for the DC trip . So, if you haven’t heard yet then you probably didn’t make it. Sorry.

Has anyone from AZ been notified of their status yet?

I mean the Virginia Beach/Norfolk, not Washington, D.C. One of my classmates received a rejection email yesterday, but I have not heard back. Do you know about my market?

awww^, ur positive that apr. 19th is the last date? cuz the website says end of Apr. I have not gotten an email or phone call or anything… was really looking forward to this program, but yea, after I read about the credentials of people who did get accepted, I felt way under qualified. all I put was volunteering teaching swimming and working at a museum…

is there any way we can get in contact to make sure?

In the email they sent you to confirm they got your application there is a number. If you try it let me know what they say. :)

P.S. I think the dates differ by market, so the deadline probably is not April 19 for every market. My classmate was rejected on the 17th and that would only leave two days for her to confirm and I don’t think that is enough time.

For everyone worrying about qualifications, the essays actually matter a lot. There are still a lot of people in the BoA group that haven’t don’t stuff like setting up nonprofits and outreach programs, but their essays were AMAZING

Also, last year notifications were as late as May 31st. In the package they sent us, April 19th was the date to register. Maybe its different for different markets? Cuz I know people have just received their notifications this week, so im pretty sure they wouldn’t make them register on such short notice.

If y’all have any other questions, post them on the BoA fb page. Theres a lot of people that can help. <a href=“Student Leaders Internship | Facebook”>Student Leaders Internship | Facebook;

And if anyone has any questions about the program itself, my orientation is this Friday (April 26th) ad ill ask those questions during the orientation

PS. Fo any accepted aplicants, you might have a really cool orientation planned. For the DC kids, they sent us tickets to the DC nationals game with suite tickets. I think their feeding us to Idk I thought it was pretty sweet haha

@yetanotherid
Did you get your notification yet?

Also, are there any other DC kids that got accepted? I kinda confused the markets, and a lot of kids who I thought were in my market were really in the Richmond market hahahahah
If so, pm me!

@Keely - Yep, I will be seeing you in DC. I am already on your FB page :-)

I’m so excited for you. I am stilling waiting to hear back, but my faith is strong. Anyways, I hope that Virginia Beach has an exciting orientation also.

P.S. Did they tell you that you were accepted by phone? email? mail?

Thanks in advance!

They first called me to tell me I got in. They then confirmed my email and my hoome address. They sent me a confirmation email an hour after the phone conversation

The next day, or the next 2 days, they sent me a package with forms

I hope you get in!

keely613, if u don’t mind, would you post some of your credentials that you listed on the app and how you felt about your essays? thanks! just want to get an idea of the kinda people they are accepting.

I think I posted this on the last page, but ill do it again. This is primarily what I put on my app, thats it. Id upload my resume, but I dont think you can do it on here. SO this is what I put on the whole “what volunteer activities did you do”

I started two businesses. One is called Today’s Readers Tomorrow’s Leaders (TRTL) and Youth Literacy Initiative (YLI). Today’s Readers Tomorrow’s Leaders (TRTL) is a nonprofit pending approval that I started during high school by myself. Youth Literacy Initiative (YLI) is both a volunteer and community program and soon to be legal corporation. The mission of TRTL (and basically YLI as well) is to improve education and literacy rates around the world for disadvantaged youth. Today’s Readers Tomorrow’s Leaders (TRTL) and the Youth Literacy Initiative (YLI) organize book drives in local communities and send the books to homeless shelters, hospitals, poor schools, and other institutions where disadvantaged youth reside in. We have collected over 800 books from our book drives. In addition, we send educational packets to children’s homeless shelters, and make audio-visual recordings of public domain books. We are in the process of making educational videos that teach the fundamentals of Math and English, establishing a pen pal program with schools outside of America, and translating the educational packets do we can send them to schools outside of America. We are also setting up literacy programs with schools outside of America. We have volunteers in over 22 states across the USA and we have some international volunteers in Japan and India. I started and hired some bloggers to blog about the company and about general educational issues and events. We recently received the Disney Friends for Change grant adn recognition from Youth Service America as well as local newspaper recognition [however i didnt put the Disney grant, YSA recognition in my BoA application]. We were also chosen to be a partner of the Presidential Volunteer Service Awards (PVSA). We’re having a huge event on Global Youth Service Day (April 27th) in Washington D.C, so if ya’ll are in the area visit, if your bored. Im also in the midst of starting literacy programs in Washington D.C over the summer [One of the main reason why I chose to do BoA instead of this state department travel abroad scholarship]

Also, ive done 4 internships at the Smithsonian [Research assistant in the vertebrate zoology department and youth intern], National Building Museum [helped with a community service program], worked on the Mitt Romney campaign [IM NOT A REPUBLICAN AT ALL. I just wanted to be busy during the summer], and United States Korean Arts Foundation [ I am not korean. I was the only non-korean. It was sooooo awk]

Other volunteer experiance: Weekly volunteer at Jill’s House [helps mentally handicapped children], mentor in a mentorship program, apart of a community teen council (and hopefully will be VP next year), volunteered at a daycare where children had mothers who drank during preganancy, apart of the Fairfax County Youth Governing Board [havent really shown up to a meeting tho], and a few other volunteer programs.

***That was basically what i put on my application. Or at leats the things i remember. It was so long ago haha. I didn’t really expect to get in because I heard how fierce the competition was. Glad i did!

Essays: I wrote a lot about my nonprofit and my outreach program and how I coordinated it even though my board members were from all across the nation and handilling those diffiuclties of location diffrences (time diffrences) and working and dealing with other leaders
FOr the person I admired, I talked about this mentally handicapped girl that I worked with who inspired me to make a greater diffrence in the world for people. I did most of my essays in a day. Sure they had grammar and spelling mistakes since im very prone to them and I didnt get them checked (last minute app).

*******I dont know if this matters, but im also a junoir. I dont know if thier more prone to junoirs and senoirs.

Most people started some kind of outreach program or organization. But I know some people that had really good essays. It all depends how competitive your market is and how well your essays and recs were.
I didnt work on my essays as uch as I should have, since I did it all last minute. My reccomendation was alright, since it was from a teache I didnt know that well (I was exhausting my teachers for reccomendations at that point).

If I got in, im sure you’ll get in. Your essays and Recs matter a lot, not just volunteer activities

By the way, if any of you guys are in DC this weekend, check out my Global Youth Serviec Day event (im shamelessly posting t everywhere cuz I planned it last minute and I still need some more volunteers)
