How easy is it to open a bank account at Wachovia and link the account with OneCar? Is there a branch on campus in order to do this? Where?

There is a Wachovia branch right on Franklin Street, the main street of Chapel Hill, practically on campus, and there's an ATM machine at the student union. I don't know about the OneCar link, but you can call the local phone number (919) 929-0311 to find out.

When I was at CTOPS this past week, I went to the mini-Wachovia office located about 30 feet away from the OneCard office (right past the student union and attached to the bookstore) and opened a checking and savings account with just $50 and $10, respectively. Then, they gave me proof of my account and I walked down to the OneCard office and told them I wanted the OneCard Plus, showed them my account info stuff, and they made it into a Wachovia card as well--super easy.

By the way, look cute in your ID picture because apparently you'll have to have it for all four years..even if you lose your card, they'll use the saaame picture. ;)

lmao, thanks for that tip leah377

IF you have not attended CTOPS yet, there is a Wachovia table set up in the bottom of the Union where you receive your orientation folder. You can set up your account with these people and then simply show proof of having a Wachovia account at the One Card office (Check book, statement, etc.) Your One Card will not work as a check card initially if you set it up at the Wachovia table at orientation. The representatives there said it works in about two days, once all the info is actually in the computer.

You may also set up your wachovia account at a Wachovia in your home town and skip the whole wachovia deal in Chapel Hill and simply go to the one card office with proof of a Wachovia Account.

Son will be at the August CTOPS. We do not have a Wachovia near by. I called Wachovia @ 1-800-922-4684. I was able to open the initial accounts over the phone. Needed to have my SSN & Driver's License information. My son was also part of the call since he is over 18. He needed to give them the same information. A check has been mailed into fund the account. At the same time I set up the checking and savings accounts (helps for the overdraft protection). My understanding is that it will be much faster and easier once we are at CTOPS to get the OneCard Plus. Might need the UNC code that came in a mailer about 4-6 weeks ago. The individual I spoke to at Wachovia was familar with the package. Monday through Friday teh hours are 8-8 EST. I do not know the weekend hours.

Just so you know there are other options. When S was a Freshman, Wachovia was not yet in Dallas so we opened his account at Bank of America. He has never been able to link his One Card to his bank account and maintains a separate B of A credit and debit card. He (or we) transfer(s) money to his One Card when he needs to, but it has never really been an issue for him.

B of A also has an ATM on campus as well as a branch on Franklin Street. The only real issue we had was freshman year when he got his first Morehead check (for tuition, room and board etc) and B of A tried to put a 5 day hold on the funds. I put in a call to the branch manager and solved it in minutes. It was all rather foolish and I think perhaps punitive since the Morehead Foundation had banked with them for years and had just within the previous two years switched to Wachovia since the CEO is a former Morehead Scholar.

Sometimes you get lucky and can change your picture, I've lost my card twice and last time the guy asked if I wanted a new one... too bad I looked even worse that day than the old one! ;)

Hahaha. Everyone always looks horrible in those pictures. It's like being at the DMV, lol. : -D

I've now got my one card linked to my Wachovia account, but I was disappointed in what little I could do with the "link". All I seem to be able to do it load money in my UNC "expense" account on my One Card and I had to do this using a phone based transfer system. So 2 questions:

Can I load money into my Flex dining account, pay tuition, or buy a meal plan with it? this fall, I already had done these separately with a check to UNC, but the phone transfer system only seemed to let me transfer into my "expense" account.

Is there a web interface I can use for the transfer process verses the non-straight forward phone one?

this link should get you in business

http://www.onecard.unc.edu/

i think there you click the manage account button and login using your onyen and password and you can do almost everything there

My D is OOS and has a bank account at Citibank. I was amazed to discover that there are no Citibank branches in North Carolina (according to the Citibank phone teller). Is this true?

Can funds be transferred from a Citibank account (not a Wachovia account) to the OneCard?

Thanks for all the very rich information you guys sent! Very helpful!

I am also OOS. I don't have my own bank account, and my family doesn't use Wachovia. I understand that you can have a separate "expense" account vs. "checking" account with your One Card or One Card Plus, and I read "free incoming wire transfers" somewhere on the Wachovia site. Supposing I was to open a Wachovia account in my name, would wire transfers be the most efficient way to receive a limited amount of spending/expense money? I've never had to do any banking myself so my knowledge is limited (and I would be grateful if someone could educate me about its basics, I'm trying to figure it out myself but it would be a great help if someone who's done it/set it up before could help).

Wachovia is headquartered in Charlotte, NC as is Bank of America which explains their strong presence in the state. Many banks like Citibank have decided its not worth the money or effort to try to create a base in a state that is so dominated by these two major players. There are a number of smaller regional banks in Chapel Hill but Wachovia and B of A really control the market.

I was completing my direct deposit consent form.It says to attach a preprinted check.I want my money to be deposited in checking account. But I haven't yet written any check or anything, since I just opened my Wachovia account during CTOPS.Now do I just write a check and write void on it and attach it w/ my consent form?

^^^ just get your check and write VOID in big letters accross it... no signature or anything

Another stupid banking question.I was doing the Wachovia direct deposit form.It asks for the name and address of the employer.Do I put UNC Chapel Hill there?
