Hi. Is the Wachovia Bank branch still located on campus?
Thank you!

Yes, it is!

Thanks, Juba!

I think we just received a mail piece from Wachovia encouraging us to open an account. Is this necessary? I thought the Deacon card kind of replaced the need for a bank account. Particularly if the student also has a credit card. Is a bank account recommended?

Well, you can use Deacon Dollars for stuff on campus (and to order Papa John’s for delivery), but if the student’s planning to do things off campus, I suppose he/she could just use the credit card for everything…

Personally, I didn’t really use Deacon Dollars beyond my freshman year because I think it can be a lot like “funny money” where you don’t realize how much you’re spending, and I preferred just to make my own spending money. I basically just used my debit card for mostly everything (it was funded with my summer job and campus job money) and credit card for basically just textbooks and if an emergency came up. They weren’t Wachovia accounts but another bank’s.

I think that it’s helpful to have an account at a local bank for several reasons. If your child has a job, it’s a place to deposit their paycheck. When there’s a branch close to home, we can deposit money in the account here and our son can access it there…we did this for our older daughter while she was at school, and it worked well for us.

You don’t have to use Wachovia. I prefer BB&T so that’s where I keep my checking account. They have branches across Winston Salem (close to Campus) and an ATM on campus.

I disagree, if you do not have a car you should have a Wachovia banking account. It makes life easier.

Use my reference, get us both $25.

Out for the money Saket?

That’s true though. I didn’t have a car freshman year and getting to my bank was difficult, but now that I do I’m very pleased with BB&T.

I’m just capitalizing on this situation. I think I’ve had a few people actually use my reference. Wachovia has payed me $0.00.

Maybe I’ll sue Wachovia, or WellsFargo. LOL

Do it. I doubt they’ll actually give you any money. I think they’re hurting.

Deacon Dollars do not replace the need for a checking account. Get an account with a bank that has branches both in Winston-Salem and wherever you are from. In the long run, it will make your life a lot easier. A bunch of banks have tables set up in Benson Center on move-in day so that you can make a college account. I did this with Bank of America and it has worked great.
