Banneker/Key Scholarship

I don't think that's true, but I think you are allowed to keep a certain amount of outside scholarship money to cover some outside expenses.

Gemstone's a personal choice, but if your last year is paid for there's not too much reason to graduate early...and it'll be pretty difficult if you're double majoring. And Gemstone isn't necessarily straight scientific research, so you can use it to pursue an outside interest.

And congrats on the full ride.

Congrats on the full ride!!

No, there is no personal stipend included. If you don't spend all your book money you can keep what is left, but that's about it. Also, if you work on or off campus, it does not affect your scholarship.

Ok thanks... the reason I could graduate early is because I am going into my freshman year with around 70 college credits. So, depending on the majors, it wouldn't be hard.

I do have 3k a year outside scholarship from the state of MD, anyone know if I could keep any of this?

I think you can keep at least some of it, but you should call financial aid to find out exactly how much.

Powerhawk,

I think the limit is $3,000.00, but do check with financial aid. I feel like I remember them saying that the scholarship could not exceed the portion of the COA listed for transportation and personal expenses which is right around $3,000.00.

DS is coming in as a sophomore, but he is not going to graduate early. Enjoy college!! Also, check with your advisor regarding this idea. I know that if you plan on graduate school or in our case, med school, the schools you apply to may want to see that some courses were taken at the college level and not in high school. They can tell you better than I can, I just thought I would throw that out there.

How many credits do you need for sophomore status?

I have no clue!!! DS said they figured it out while he was up there for the B/K interview and they told him that's what he would be classified as. He is out of town for UIL, but I will ask him when I talk to him.

I doubt I qualify anyway. Doesn't matter much.

In most cases, you need 120 hrs to graduate (depends on the program). 0-29 makes you a freshman, 30-59 makes you a sophomore, 60-89 makes you a jr, and 90+ is senior. This is very important when it comes to things like registration priority, starting when you register in the fall for Spring 2010, parking space priority 2nd year, etc.

Older D had 58 credits when she started at UMD, which was sweet! She's planning to stay at least 3 1/2 semesters, and will get a double degree in Astronomy and Physics, with enough hours for a minor in German. The beauty of public schools. Younger D will be coming in with somewhere around 36-40 hrs.....she's done a preliminary plan, and it's conceivable that with a couple of summer classes, she will finish in 3 yrs, with majors in Environmental Science/Policy and Spanish.

Even if you aren't bringing in that much AP credit, you'll be able to register before the kids who didn't have any AP credit at all.

Okay thanks.

Yeah, I'll bring some, but nowhere near that much.

So if I'm coming in with 70 college credits, they will classify me as a junior?

You'll have junior class standing, but you'll still be a freshman.

ginab,
30 credits for sophomore standing
60 credits for junior standing
90+ senior standing

Eh, depending how AP's go this year I might be about a second semester freshman, but it doesn't matter much because I have no desire to graduate early, but the advanced standing for class registration and everything'll be cool.

iPhone & iTouch

I had several questions for admissions today and one of them was the pressing question of how and when B/K’s will receive the iPhone or iTouch.

Here’s the answer: B/K’s will receive an email over the summer asking them which of the two they have selected. If you select the iPhone, you will receive further information on AT&T plans to choose from to activate.

YOU WILL RECEIVE YOUR iPHONE OR iTOUCH THE WEEK YOU MOVE INTO THE DORM

Also, many people have been worried about senioritis or just suffering from burn out and concerned that their scholarship or offer of admission may be rescinded. UMD admissions DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY MORE DOCUMENTS FROM YOU OR YOUR SCHOOL!! NO REPORT CARD AND NO FINAL TRANSCRIPT!! YOU ARE DONE!!

BUMP FOR 2012!!! This thread’s 6th Anniversary!!!

bump!

any guesses on when people will be notified about their status for the scholarship? from skimming this thread it seems to change a bit every year…

Bump!

Wondering too when selection/interview notifications will be out…maybe early March?

D got invited to CP scholar. Anyone here know if CP Scholar get offered for full or partial scholarship too? Or Honors/Gemstone have better chances?

Got this info from: [University of Maryland - Scholarships](http://www.admissions.umd.edu/finaid/scholarships.cfm)
"Merit Scholarship Notification
Admission decision letters are mailed by late January and merit scholarship award notifications begin in early March and continue through early April. Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail. For some scholarships, a student will be invited to campus for an interview before receiving notice of an award. "

So I guess we have another month to go and wait…

Since the Banneker/Key interviews start in Feb., invitations will be mailed out very soon. Invites will be sent to selected Honors College acceptees. I will be present at some of the events and always find them very enjoyable. Good luck.
