We heard today. I’m loving UMCP! Our D still needs to hear from Harvard and Stanford (the only other colleges she applied to) but UMCP Honors, B/K scholar is looking pretty good right now.

I want to congratulate all the Banneker Key recipients and for those other amazing students out there remember there are more scholarships to be announced in the next couple of months.

I have a 1560/2290, 800 History, 790 Math II and a lot of extracurriculars including jobs and leadership but no letter… any idea what they generally look for? I also happen to be instate, then again my GPA is pretty low at 3.83, even if I’m taking full IB and many APs. Also, just because I want to cling to a last ounce of hope, any idea who I’d contact to doublecheck?

Remember guys that Banneker/Key Scholarship was started to help URMs in college. The kids that got the full scholarships at my dd hs were not the top ranked with really good ECS and really good stats, but the students of color. The top ranked got presidential scholarships so they were not left in the cold. We are from MD. I am not trying to start an argument or a race debate but this is what I have seen personally. However, I did check to see the names of recent B/K students and many of the names did not look like they belong to a person of color or URM so who knows what they are looking for anymore. I just hate to see kids work so hard and not understand why they didn’t get picked. BTW the kids that didn’t get B/K are going to top 20 schools so it didn’t really hurt them in the end. One of which it costs her less than if she had gone to MD with the partial scholarship. I like to say things happen for a reason.

Well, if there’s any truth to that, I’m mixed race (African American and white), and I still haven’t gotten anything. Guess I’m SOL. There goes my hope of getting a full ride! Hooray!
I also talked with two of my friends, both of whom are African American females, and are also in the top ten, and they haven’t received any invites either.

Race is no longer a criteria for B/K and hasn’t been for several years. Just like every year there are people who question why they weren’t accepted to xyz-competitive school, there are always people who are disappointed in not getting a B/K invite. Congrats to those who did, and for those at the top who question why they weren’t, I assume you’ll be in the running for one of the other merit awards at UMD. Numbers is not all that goes in to it, and you will make yourself crazy (not to mention bitter) to try to figure out why you didn’t get invited. Best of luck to you all.

Sorry jlewis for not getting an invite but hopefully you will get something. I think MD is very stingy with scholarship money. My dd didn’t get a dime from MD and was 7/584 students. Her SAT was only 1370/1600 so we expected not to get anything.

From the financial aid website: The Banneker/Key scholarship is the University of Maryland’s most prestigious academic award for undergraduates and is bestowed upon the top 1% of entering freshmen each year.

I believe this award is for the truly extraordinary individual. My guess is that when you meet one you will instantly recognize what makes him/her special and deserving.

Congratulations and relish the recognition you have received.

Due to my anxiety about all of this (!), I called again to try to find out a little more about when letters were sent. There was a lot of misinformation on the front lines at admissions, but when redirected to other depts., they seemed to have some clarity.

They indicated that the letters went out on 2/10 AND 2/11. That would suggest that they may not have arrived yet for some people due to mail delays.

I got a letter from umd, but it was from clark and not banneker key. I am assuming that I have not been selected as a banneker key. I’m really shocked because quite frankly I am banneker key material and I know deep down in my heart that I deserved that scholarship. Anyway, its their loss.

I have one question:

Assuming that I did not receive the Banneker key scholarship, does this suggest that I probably won’t get into my other schools which are more prestigous than maryland, such as hopkins, duke, u penn, northwestern, and cornell?

Mrphysics it does not mean you will not get admitted to any of those schools. It just means you didn’t have what they are looking for in a B/K scholar. Don’t freak out just yet. Just what and see. You may still be a candidate for other scholarships at MD.
