I got into Barnard Bound and I’m sooo excited!!!

yay!! mayb we should pm each other so we know our names when we go… well if u want :)

Hi Barnard fans

Anyone else applying from outside of the US? (and still an American citizen?)

I’m from Seoul, Korea and applying ED…so excited!!!

Hi girls! I’ve recently become very interested in Barnard and hope to take a tour there soon! My mom isn’t so crazy about it because of it being an all-girls school and very expensive, but hopefully once we visit she’ll become more open to the idea. And if I get in and decide to go, hopefully something will work out financially!

I’m hoping to study Art History or European Studies, anyone else out there with the same interests?

Hey jcdancer! Definitely bring your mom along for the campus tour if it’s the women’s college aspect that she’s really objecting to. I was VERY resistant when my mom suggested we look at Barnard for that very reason. We headed over for a tour and info session after seeing Columbia and I was done. I loved it. I’m applying ED and I’m not even applying to Columbia! During my visit I was really struck by how the environment didn’t at all come off as really, really all-girls. There were guys walking around campus and it seemed just like more of an extension of Columbia or even the city at large. You might want to talk to your mom about why she isn’t into the women’s college thing, it might be valuable to explain that Barnard (from what I can tell) isn’t a place that preaches FEMALE DOMINATION, but rather creates an environment where female leadership is expected and nurtured. Personally, I find that pretty empowering.
As far as financial stuff goes, I’m sure one of the very helpful parents on these boards would be willing to give you advice on how you might be able to make Barnard happen while being fiscally responsible.

I’m leaning towards Religion and Anthropology majors (like all things, that’s subject to change) but I have major love for art history…if I get in I’ll probably spend half my time at the Met :-)

jcdancer9: yes, Barnard is “very expensive”. But we found their financial aid to be reasonable and made the school do-able for us. NOT EASY, but do-able. But that is our family. You and your parents need to be on the same page with this. Let us know what your mom thinks after the tour. And also let her know there are parents on here who have been there and done that who are eager to help and answer any questions she may have, if we can.

best to you!

Thanks so much!! I’ll definitely fill you guys in, I’m hoping to go for a tour in the next couple of weeks before it gets to be the holiday season and we’ll be too busy.

And shmeepo, if we both get in, I’ll be right next to you at the Met! :P

So jealous of those that are visiting at this time of the year. :p

Hi, I’m definitely applying to Barnard. I couldn’t sift through all 20-some pages of this thread, so forgive me if this has already been covered, but how long are everyone’s supplemental paragraphs? I wrote mine then found out there’s a 1000-character limit (with spaces) on the boxes provided- that is to say, not a whole lot of characters. My longest essay is circa 1700 and my shortest is still ~1200. Technically, I could probably upload them to the website as separate word documents, but how unwise would it be to go over, and how far would you stretch it?

swngbaskt, I would definitely condense–they’re short answer responses, after all! Also, under directions: “Please limit your response to a well-developed paragraph (about 200 words).”

@swngbaskt: i have the same problem, my responses are pretty long, i think 200 to 350 they would except… its unfortunate because there is so much i want to elaborate on! but then again the poor admission officers read thousands& thousands of these, a really long response will not please them.

Yeah, wordcount-wise my shortest one is 195 words, but still over the character limit! It’s so frustrating.
essay A: 256 words
B: 305
C: 212
D: 195
I’m trying to cut down, but less is not always more and there’s so much I want to say and everything depends upon the red wheelbarrow !
is anyone else having this problem/defying it?
