Current student at Barnard here, I just wanted to point out some info in this thread which is not true: there is no credit limit to the number of classes you can take at Columbia as a Barnard student (if there is, I’ve never been told of it, nor do I know anyone who has reached that limit). Additionally, I’m not sure if Barnard’s “core” people have been referring to is the general education requirements (Foundations), or if it’s Columbia’s core, but we can definitely take classes at Columbia to satisfy the Foundations curriculum (for example, I’ve taken all my language classes at Columbia and I’m currently taking the tech requirement for Foundations at Columbia). The only classes we absolutely have to take at Barnard are the First Year Seminar and Writing classes (individual departments may also have certain required classes that are only offered at Barnard).
My D21 is planing to apply ED. She’s pretty nervous because her last 4 SAT dates were cancelled (she has one older score that is ok and she plans to use it), and her ECs since COVID are pretty slim. Good luck to everyone. It’s a crazy year to be applying. Anything can happen.
@kayson3259 Thank you for posting here. My q is abt the interviews. All the dates and slots have been filled so how do I go about scheduling an interview and how important is the interview for ED?
Hi all! heard about barnard only recently, but I love it so much I may actually switch to ED! Major is probably something in the humanities (lit, history, poli sci) <3
I recently did an info session and they said they are going to post about it soon on their website sometime in the next week. I think they are putting in requests for alumna interviews. They said to call the admissions office if you’re applying ED. I don’t think it will make or break you based on what I heard, though. So don’t sweat it
No - the information stated here about courses at Barnard vs. Columbia is mostly wrong.
Let’s first start with the “Core” - THAT applies only to students of Columbia College. They have a fairly rigid list of courses EVERYONE is required to take, something that many colleges do.
Barnard doesn’t have that rigid “Core” which is why you won’t take any specific “Core” classes as a Barnard student. Now, Barnard DOES have something called “Foundations”, but it only expects you to broaden your horizon by including courses in your studies that tangent some loose, overarching themes, a.k.a. “Modes of Thinking”, such as Quantitatively and Empirically Analysis, Technology/Digital, New York City, Global Inquiry, Social Difference, Historical Perspective.
The term “core” is not a all applicable at Barnard. There is a HUGE list of courses that fulfill one or multiple of these “Modes of Thinking”. So you can pick courses that truly are in your general areas of interest and satisfy the Foundation requirements:
http://snowbird.barnard.edu/pls/bcapp/mybc_courses_fd_reqmts.courses_fd_reqmts
Also, there is no limit to the number of courses students can take at either school. You’ll go into the University’s course catalogue and pick the courses - some will be held at Columbia, others at Barnard. Unless you are looking to take classes with certain professors, or are worried about walking from your bed straight into the seminar room, you really don’t care about the location.
Of course, once you chose a major you’d talk to your advisor to make sure that you are taking sufficient courses for your major. It is entirely possible, that you might find that some required courses are ONLY taught at Barnard - but that’s truly secondary. Given class sizes, quality of Professors you might eventually find tilting towards Barnard anyway.
trying to apply ed…still have 20 min to go but the common app says deadline passed. DId they not consider the daylight savings?
I doubt they considered DLST. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to count on that.
Applied ED to Barnard!!! Any others?!
@AliciaSmith I did!! Good luck!!
I did too!! Manifesting that acceptance
I applied for ED can’t wait to get the results back !!!
Hi! im applied ed! future compsci and econ double major, currently getting coffee drunk and manifesting acceptance
Hi, guys! I applied ED and I really want to get in but I am not sure about Barnard’s financial aid for internationals. Does anyone know if they give good aid packages to internationals? I’m really worried about.
Also, I did not give the interview so will I be at a disadvantage?
I’d be really grateful if anyone could answer these two questions.
thank you!!
Hi everyone! I applied ED to Barnard this fall and I am very excited. I know the website says the results come out by mid-december. Does anyone know what date the results for ED were released last year? Thanks!
I have my interview on Wednesday. Any tips? I applied RD but Barnard is my 2nd choice!!
Hi! Submitted my ED- hopefully in Philosophy. Super excited and nervous about admissions.

My daughter did early decision and did an interview with a senior back in September.
