I did!
I wrote about Christina Yang…so different from everybody’s topic lol.
@biochemgirl99 I didn’t realize that they don’t accept IDOC forms so now I’m going to have to fax everything to them, but they told me that there’s no penalty, so at least I didn’t entirely screw up.
I had to fax the financial aid supporting docs today too.
@AlmostThere2018 My parents don’t have a fax machine so I have to mail it. Do you know what the Student Tax Nonfiler Form 18-19 is? On Emory’s portal it’s not due until September of 2019 and I couldn’t find anything mentioning it on Barnard’s website.
@AcademiaSavvy – I’m pretty sure this is it. https://barnard.edu/sites/default/files/2016_dependent_student_tax_nonfiler_0.pdf
I found this under the Applications & Forms tab on the left of Barnard’s financial aid page.
Good luck with the rest of the admissions process!
@AlmostThere2018 OHH Okay, I got thrown off by the 2016 after it. I submitted that phew! Thanks and I wish you well!
Obviously they only ask of people that they are accepting. It goes without saying. Probably because they need to justify the full ride packages they’ll be sending.
Elementary, my dear Watson.
@byadg123 Did your D receive the financial aid portal email?
I faxed some docs for my daughter yesterday and now they are asking for additional tax information – basically something in our return raised a flag about an asset they want to know more about. So I’ll send that off tomorrow. Should I take this as a good sign? Who am I kidding, I guess I am, but also wondering if it’s just business as usual, lol Best not read too much into it, I’m sure.
@AlmostThere2018 I think that’s a great sign! They wouldn’t waste their time reviewing aid documents for a student that wasn’t admitted. I found it weird how we received emails with access to the Financial Aid portal more than a month after applying. All of the other colleges I applied to sent it within the week of applying to their college.
Although, I’m trying to not get my hopes up, in my interview for (SP)2 they told me they hope to see me on campus very soon, so I don’t know how I should take that.
@AcademiaSavvy - Yup. How did you guess?
We have an unusual situation with a small business that has zero income. We have assets but no w2’s so any algorithm would flag it. I have to fax a bunch of stuff on Tuesday.
Sorry to burst bubbles, but because Barnard is need-blind, the financial aid department works independently of admissions. So no, being asked for financial aid info doesn’t signify anything other than that the financial aid department is doing their job of collecting documentation for all applicants.
Now, an interview for SP is a very good sign, because the web site does say that only “pre-screened students” are interviewed.
But for the rest – the financial aid department can’t be waiting until the end of March to write financial aid awards – they need to be ready to roll things out very quickly so that students have their awards ready to review at the time they are admitted or very soon afterwards.
I had no bubble to burst. It would be like a bank sending me a pamphlet about great mortgage rates. Wouldn’t mean that I was approved for one.
@calmom - I don’t think being need blind means they can’t communicate at all. It’s my understanding it means that the admissions staff are not looking at any need information when making their decisions. Admissions staff could notify the financial aid folks of applicants in the ‘likely or maybe’ piles – the ones that get discussed in selection committees – without violating being need blind and to help reduce the overall workload for fin aid offices. Just seems like with colleges getting THOUSANDS of applications (Barnard had 7700last year) they wouldn’t have the manpower to determine fin aid packages for all of them. All that said, I know Barnard prides itself on its holistic review of students so they may not eliminate any off the bat and perhaps you’re right. But, wow, 7000 applications is a lot - esp. when they don’t use iDoc downloads for some things! Good luck everyone!!!.
@AlmostThere2018 - There are plenty of parents over the years who have reported getting inquiries from financial aid departments but then their child is waitlisted or denied. I seem to remember at least one from Barnard, though I can’t be sure. I’m not trying to be mean, but I think it can a negative admission decision can be even more painful if you have created false hopes by misunderstanding the process.
There may be a stats based prescreening process that would allow the admissions department to help financial aid to do some prescreening to window down the list, as I think that any highly selective college gets a significant fraction of applications from students who are clearly going to be turned away.
But I think that for the bulk of RD admit at Barnard, the decision isn’t made until mid-March. It’s not as if they just admit everyone who looks good until the class is full, and then put every desirable applicant after that on the waitlist. And they can’t push everything to the last minute - because sometimes it can take time to get documentation or answers. And if a student is admitted but the financial aid package isn’t ready, then that student might choose another college with an attractive award without bothering to wait on Barnard’s.
So I think they review documents as they come in-- “review” may be an automated or rote process. In your case you received an inquiry about something in your tax return that “raised a flag about an asset”. So what I am saying is that “something” might be the sort of thing that would automatically be flagged for clarification.
So yes, of course, your daughter may very well be admitted. But no, I don’t think that the financial aid contact can be taken to mean anything other than that your daughter’s app hasn’t gone into the automatic reject pile.
Barnard’s financial aid determination process is VERY formulaic – the numbers going in to the calculation are going to determine what comes out. So determination is very automatic-- it is the data gathering part that can be troublesome. But of those thousands of applicants – a large proportion probably have relatively straightforward tax financial situations and tax returns – W2 income, standard deductions, etc. At this point they are not determining what your daughter’s aid packet will be – they are simply making sure that they have all the information they will need to generate an award package if and when she is admitted.
You said that you faxed documents to Barnard one day and got an inquiry the next - so that just suggests to me an efficient process. That is, someone who is reviewing or entering data from tax returns as they come in, and then immediately following up when something is flagged, rather than holding documents or putting them aside until later.
So my only point is – don’t misread the signals. There are some things that can be very positive signs, but a question about info on your tax return isn’t one of them.
So the website for Barnard said the due dates for all the forms were Feb 1st and I was only given the portal and asked to send them after but I really nervous.
I emailed asking if they would still review my forms
@biochemgirl99 I’m in the same boat as you, but when I called them last week, they said there would not be a penalty on a financial award for turning them in after. I suspect they were late sending out the financial aid portal IDs this year, so they’re offering leniency.
phew! @AcademiaSavvy
