Barnard College RD Class of 2022!

I am so worried because I have no idea what to expect :frowning:

OMG guys I just got a voicemail today from the assistant of enrollment management and she said not to worry, because it’s a positive thing, but I called her and she didn’t answer! I think it might be an interview for the Science Pathways Scholars Program!!

When are they supposed to be notifying people for interviewing for the science pathways program?

@DancingwithStars On the (SP)^2 website it states “Pre-screened students will be invited to interview via phone or Skype with faculty from the (SP)2 committee in late winter/early spring.” and I found on Barnard’s website that the assistant that called me works for Jennifer Fondiller, who developed (SP)^2!!!

@AcademiaSavvy I guess that I wasn’t selected then :frowning: congrats!

@DancingwithStars I called her back this morning and I scheduled an interview for SP2 next week! Maybe they haven’t gotten to you yet!

Since it says you’re pre-screened, I wonder what’s the likelihood of me being accepted lol

Also, do you guys know if AP credit can be used to replace the language requirement? I can’t seem to find it on the website.

No exemptions for general ed requirements (including language) for AP credits for studente entering after 2016 - but it may affect placement and, depending on language, you might be able to get points. See https://barnard.edu/student-services/registrar/obtaining-external-credit/advanced-placement-credit

@calmom Dang! Thanks for finding that though. I wonder why they don’t allow it anymore.

I know that about 2 years ago Barnard loosened the overall requirements – when my daughter was at Barnard, students were required to have two years of foreign language study – whereas now the requirement is only for two semesters. Other requirements were relaxed as well when Barnard moved from 9 ways of knowing to Foundations. I really don’t know the reasoning behind the decisions, but I’m speculating that the relaxation of general ed requirements was tied to restrict use of AP’s to fill the requirements. That is, maybe they felt that too many students were using AP credits to avoid general ed requirements, and at the same time they recognized that without the ability to apply the AP credits that students would benefit from more flexibility.

@calmom Okay makes sense! I’d much rather only do a year than 2 years of a language requirement. Do you know if it’s difficult to request a course to fulfill a requirement?

Barnard will give you a list of which courses fill specific requirements. For language you could opt to continue in the language you have already studied, or you could start a new one.

@calmom Thanks, but what I meant was if I could ask for a course to be counted as fulfilling a gen ed requirement? For example, the PE requirement states “One-point studio courses in the Dance Department also fulfill the Physical Education requirement.” If I’m accepted, I want to take DNCE-BC2573 which is a dance course, but not listed as an option to fulfill the PE requirement. Could I request to have the course fulfilled as a PE requirement, or are they set in stone?

And here is a link to the form → https://barnard.edu/sites/default/files/student_appeal_form_update_1-31-17.pdf

So yes, you can ask, but only after you have already completed a course. So not something you would want to plan on, but it could give you some more flexibility down the line.

I know that when my daughter was at Barnard, she felt her linguistics course should have satisfied the 9 Ways of Knowing quantitative reasoning requirement-- and she probably felt strongly enough about it to talk to her advisor, but I don’t know if she pursued it further than that.

But in hindsight it is better that she went with the program, because she took a basic, one-semester introductory stats course at Columbia. She got an A. Later she went to grad school where stats was required. Except that because of her credit from the stats course, she was able to waive out of the graduate class. Given her dislike of all things math-y, that was a pretty big payoff from a requirement she didn’t think she wanted to meet.

The dance class you are looking at probably isn’t a studio class, and that would be why it doesn’t qualify as PE credit, though it likely can be used for other GE requirements. But if you are a dancer, then any of the regular studio classes at Barnard is a wonderful and very easy way to fulfill the PE requirement – not something to be avoided.

@AcademiaSavvy babe stop crowding every single thread up
i saw your five million posts on the columbia ED thread like learn how to google with some of your questions

@calmom Thank you! I’m not a dancer by any means, just trying to decrease the amount of classes that I don’t value as much such as the language and PE requirements. I love the Modes of Thinking and Foundations, but 'm planning on a chemistry major with pre-med and research, so I’m trying to see if there is a way to cut down the PE and language courses that are unsubstantial to me.

@clubpenguindude I don’t know why you feel this way as the whole purpose of College Confidential is for people to ask questions and connect with the nervousness of college decisions, social life etc. Calmom had a daughter who attended Barnard and as I don’t know anyone who knows of someone or went to the college themselves, I am going to take the opportunity to ask someone–who is willing to answer my questions as I have no way to will them myself–who has a personal experience with the college. I’m sorry if you’re not as excited for college as I am, but I want to know everything before I decide where to spend the next four years of my life.

@AcademiaSavvy - if you are a RD applicant, then its good for you to be thinking about these issues when comparing the schools that accept you – as you may decide in the end that you prefer a school with a more flexible curriculum.

Don’t underestimate the value of foreign language proficiency in the sciences, either.

I just realized do you guys have access to the Financial Aid Portal at https://netpartner.barnard.edu/NetPartnerStudent/Logon.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fNetPartnerStudent

Did anyone else receive an email about the financial aid portal today???
