So I was accepted to both schools and I am planning on going in as undeclared. I want to eventually major in accounting, finance, or even both. I know that I will have to transfer into School of Management at Binghamton and apply for Zicklin at Baruch. My dad says that I should go to Baruch because I will have bigger and better opportunities in New York City. What are some pros and cons of each?

My D applied to Binghamton SOM and though we visited Baruch, she did not apply there. I liked it but I’m a CUNY grad and was fine with their more spartan urban facilities. My D not so much. I 100% agree with your father, I believe Baruch because of their reputation and location would have the better opportunities. Binghamton is a great school but I’m concerned with their graduate placement rate (available on USNWR). Obviously the facilities and campus at Bing rival many private colleges. Baruch doesn’t even have real dorms. They lease from elsewhere. Do you prefer a real campus or would you be OK sitting in Madison Square Park in the greatest city in the world? No bias there . . .

Actually Bing’s SOM placement rates and other stats are available on the recently released 2013 Bloomberg/Businessweek Undergrad B schools rated site.

Well I would love to be in the city and I totally agree with you that NYC is the greatest city in the world. But I want more a traditional college campus and bing has that. A lot of current and former students from my high school go to Binghamton so it would be easier for me to get comfortable. I don’t know how to convince my father because he wants me at Baruch but my heart is set on Binghamton…

With all due respect to your father the choice should be yours. Especially since the cost will be about the same. Your future success will have more to do with you than which of these two very good schools you choose. For future success they are equally good options. I suggest you calmly and logically explain to your father what a campus experience offers that will help you grow as a person and what it means to you. Good luck.

@TheKind I wish it was that easy…when my dad sets his mind on something it’s his way or nothing. At first he wanted me to go to binghamton but because I’m not going to be in the business school for my freshman year he wants me at Baruch. I don’t get his decision because I’m not going to be in the business school at Baruch for the first year either. Thanks for your help though!

@Vish, are you guarenteed a spot in SOM? Because after your first year, Bing will look at your freshman classes instead of high school credentials for internal transfers. Assuming you’ve been accepted to Harpur at Bing for freshman year, you’ll be studying general classes and will be stuck there if you can not transfer to SOM. Internally transferring within Baruch is much easier. I don’t understand why you hadn’t applied for their business schools instead of undecided…

And @TheKind, Costs will be the same only if OP is dorming at Baruch. One semester at Baruch without dorming is around 3,000. The cost of Bing including dorming is around 20,000 for the year.

This might come from a bit of a bias, but I would go with your father. However, I suggest you talk it out with your father before you make a final decision.

You will need to apply into SOM to become an accounting major or finance major. This is not guaranteed. If you absolutely have your heart set on being an accountant/in a business major, then go where you’ve already been accepted.

If you’re deadset on accounting, I would go with Baruch. They get recruited heavily by Big 4 firms plus tuition is a quarter of Bing’s. However you have to consider where you’ll be the happiest/do the best. If you think you’ll be miserable in Baruch then chances are you wouldn’t do as well. Visit Baruch, try to see if there’s any way you can envision yourself attending and being HAPPY. Given that, you’ll have opportunities in both schools. Goodluck!

I am trying to make the same decision. I am going to major in business as well, most likely accounting. My parents want me to go to Baruch because I received a full ride there. But I would have to commute everyday, and I would much rather go to college in a more traditional campus setting.
Does anyone know the job placement for Binghamton?
And do students generally work while attending Binghamton?

Binghamton is the BETTER school… Baruch is far CHEAPER.

They are really a wash when you consider everything. Baruch will give you the opportunity to land internships + jobs easier while in college, but that is also very easy out of Binghamton… you just won’t be able to find any meaningful work in the town itself lol.

Binghamton is nationally respected, Baruch is regionally respected. Baruch you can pay with a PT job at Burger King, Binghamton requires loans or a full time job. Either way both are the top flight business public schools in NY. You can’t go wrong. Go with your gut.

Same decision here with a business major. I’m leaning toward Baruch because of its location. I heard it’s much easier to come out Baruch with a steady job than Bing, altho Bing has a better reputation(Public Ivy Runner up). If you believe a school’s name is more important, then go with Bing. Personally, I’m not too excited for a campus life like most people, but I don’t mind either. I guess Baruch would be better for me. It’s a really tough choice haha, I don’t know if I made the right decision.

Also, I’d appreciate it if anyone can answer this question. I put accountancy on my Cuny App for Baruch, but Baruch didn’t tell me which school/program I was accepted into. Is it because Baruch doesn’t have different colleges for first year unlike Bing? If this is the case, am I supposed to transfer into Zicklin later on?

HealthyFruit: I am an undergrad from Baruch (Accounting- honors program). I think the schools are seamless. They should consider you a Zicklin student from the get go. If not, that is not a problem. The colleges do not run as independently as in other schools.

To the OP: Our company hires heavily from both Baruch and Bing. They are both great schools for accounting. You will not go wrong with either one.

NeverLater, Thank you for your response! Is there a way to check if I was accepted as a Zicklin student?

I am EXACTLY in the same situation !!! Both schools are top-tier in business. I love NYC since the opportunities are endless and you can never be bored with the surrounding atmosphere, contrary to Binghamton. Again, it’s essential to go with your gut feeling. GO BEARCATS !

both schools’ mascot is the bearcat. lol

My son applied to both. They cost about the same, if you are do not already live in NYC and plan to be a commuter to Baruch. Tuition is about $2,000/year more at Bing, that’s the difference, but living in NYC is FAR more expensive if you do not live with parents, so that more than makes up the difference. Baruch can cost more or less, depending if you live with parents.

Went on tour of Baruch last summer, they said you all take same classes freshman year and THEN apply to Zicklin (or 2 other smaller schools). While it is possible in either school to start off as a liberal arts major and then get into business school, a far larger % go to business school at Baruch. Hard to imagine many get turned down for Zickin since 80% of the school is Zicklin, but I have also heard if you have good grades you can transfer at BU too, but maybe a bit more difficult.
