i am an average student from new jersey. i got into both Baruch College and Fordham University...
which one should i pick? considering the tuition vs job opportunities...
what is the salary difference between the students of the two colleges, which one gets more recognition?

I think Baruch is better for business.

Fordham much better for business. Not even close.

They are actually close, but Fordham has higher starting salaries and has a better program overall, but the finance program at Baruch is quite good as well. Personally I think that Fordham is better overall and they do provide good financial aid so don't worry too much about the tuition.

The only reason anyone should be going to any CUNY's is because of the cost of tuition.
Baruch is OK for Business but I heard nightmares about people not getting jobs after they get out of school, except for Baruch's Grad school.

You get much better opportunities at private schools.

Fordham's business is tops in the country. Forget Baruch...

what about Honors Baruch? How does that compare to other business schools (Fordham)..
I know the honors Baruch students receive full scholarship... but do they also get free housing? (i.e. their apartments are paid for)?

To say that Baruch folks get less jobs than Fordham graduates is bull. Baruch is VERY well known for its business program. It is especially strong in accounting, and I would be much more well known in accounting than Fordham. In addition, Baruch has an amazing alumni network that helps greatly with jobs.

Baruch also is about one-eighth the price of Fordham. What's not to like?

By the way, I attended Baruch in the early 70's. I had as many job offers as I could have handled; however, I also had a sterling GPA,which helps a lot.

taxguy in the 70s Baruch was held to be on par or better than NYU Stern. This is not the case anymore. Baruch is near the bottom of barrel in NYC b-schools. Don't let your alum status misguide others. The school has gone downhill since the 70s, while Fordham has improved tons.

TheMK99, you may be right. thirty-five years is a long time. However, they do still have an amazing alumni network, and they have a terrific price for tuition. Also, when I asked many accounting firm partners, they note that Baruch still has a strong clout for hiring in accounting.

Moreover, although I do believe that Fordham's name cache has risen over the years, I don't believe that they come close to the Cache of Wharton, NYU or Carnegie Mellon among others.

I am not convinced that Fordham is that much better than Baruch in quality or in its name to warrant eight (8) times the in-state tuition, especially for accounting, which is VERY GPA oriented in hiring.

Fordham doesn't come close to UPenn, NYU, etc. But look at the starting salary for Fordham. Its up there with NYU and other top B-Schools.

taxguy, I'm not saying Baruch is bad but I think Fordham is better.
I'm just one of those people who hates CUNY's.

taxguy I would absolutely agree with you that the tuition may not be worth it. However I do know Fordham students who have a cost of attendance of under 10k or so a year because of its financial aid. I would urge a prospective b-school applicant to apply to Baruch and Fordham and then compare based off the financial situation.

I know Fordham gives great aid, even to middle-class students. It should not be overlooked because of its sticker price. I also know that Baruch has kind of gone downhill - but if accounting is your goal it may offer better value than Fordham.

Rose Hill campus at Fordham could be great for dorming. however, anyone can land the same job from either Fordham or Baruch just as long as the GPA is up there. Baruch has a strong alumni network and is amazing with career development/recruiting. You also need to keep in mind that there are way more students who attend Baruch for business rather than Fordham. So, that could be a reason for higher avg starting salaries from Fordham.

biggyboy, Exactly.

If your talking IB... Neither schools are targets for recruiting, however Baruch has super alumni connections and probably sends more kids to bulge bracket and boutique banks than fordham, which in't really on the map.

And of course you can't beat that CUNY tuiton

From my friends experience at Baruch the people who don't get jobs upon graduation are those who didn't take college seriously and who had GPA well below 3.0....The average salary stat is useless since it is not broken down by GPA. My opinion is that a 3.8 GPA from Baruch and Fordham will most likely end up with the same job
