I saw this on a post somewhere else but was wondering what the deal was at dartmouth. Is there one bathroom per hall? there has to be a bathroom in each room, i couldn't imagine sharing a bathroom with an entire floors worth of guys.

Well, the overall theme for college dorms is "cost efficient" as far as the school is concerned. There are some exceptions, but I really don't hope that you expect to have your own private bathroom.

You'll be fine, really.

I think that it depends on where you live but even n the River and Choates, I beleive that there is more than 1 bathroom per hall becuse the bathrooms are single sex. There are rooms tht have private baths and half baths in the room.

My daughter lives in East Wheelock in a 3 room quad (2 double bedrooms, living room and bath) almost everyone in EW has their own bathroom If you live in a single the the configuation is most likely single, bath, single (you share a bathroom with another person in a single) I know that Xan also lives in East Wheelock. Maybe other (drownindreams, Kelsey, Appro can give you some insight on where they live)

Attached is the residential link, and you can see most of the floor plans.

It really varies. In say Mid Fayerweather, I know that the rooms have half baths with common showers in the hall. In the Choates, I think there are 4 single sex bathrooms on each floor, 2 for guys and 2 for girls (think of each floor of the Choate dorms as arranged in a t; two of the "lines" are guy halls and two are girl halls). In the River (at least the parts that I have been in, there is one bathroom for guys and one for girls on each floor.

I'd also just like to add that there aren't a lot of schools around where you can expect private fulls or even halves in any of the dorms. If you are expecting to have a full private bath when you go to college, go back to your country estate.

Sybbie and Xanatos-

Quick question about EW:

It's obviously one of the nicer dorms, with the application just to get in and all. It does have a bit of a reputation though (from what I hear) of being quiet and even a little nerdy? I'm not saying it's true- it's just what I've come across. Sybbie- what does your daughter think of it compared to other dorms- say the River or Choates? And Xanatos- what do other students think of EW? Can you tell me a little more about it? I'm thinking of applying.

I'm neither Sybbie nor Xanatos, but I'll take a stab at the question.

East Wheelock is a bit of a quiet, nerdy dorm. To be sure, I know some great, outgoing people who live there, and it does have great rooms, but my friends have told some fairly extreme horror stories of the type of person who often lives there.

That said, even for the good rooms, I'm thankful I didn't live there freshman year. In my opinion the freshmen dorms are terrific bonding experiences--many of my best friends on campus are from my old cluster. The mixed-class arrangement doesn't always facilitate this mixing so well. It's an experience most of my friends in EW didn't really get, and many of them regret it now.

The River and the Choates may not have the nicest rooms, but they're better for freshman year than EW, IMO.

Yeah, Wisconsinguy is right. East Wheelock is always so quiet compared to the rest of campus. Everyone thinks the river and choates are not the best while they are there, but in the end its the right choice by far for a social person.

I live in the choates. I share a bathroom with 6 other guys.....it's bearable, but I can't say I love it.

EW is definitely quieter than living in Choates and River dorms and they are definitely nicer. My daughter is a lot of thinks but nerd isn't one of them (and I don't mean that in a defensive way). I think that everything is relative because I am quite sure that there can be a horror story or 2 told about any dorm. A lot of the dorm experience is also highly dependent uopn the dynamics of the people living in them and to that end there are really great people and knuckleheads everywhere. The rooms are definitely amongst the nices rooms on campus, where the doubles are a pretty nice size.

Where she lives their floor is a very social, cohesive group and they are all friends and she has told me that they definitely get along much better than the other freshman floor in her dorm. They are a pretty lively bunch, her biggest complaint is sometimes when she needs to study if she doesn't feel like going to the library, that she does use one of the lounges in McColloch because they are quieter. There hasn't been any horror stories on her floor . Their floor can get a little loud due to my stereo can out blast yours (which is pretty common every where).

But she has a lot of friends in the river, choates, russell-sage. Her friends that live in other buildings tend to visit her especially when they need a quick getaway because she has more space (futon in the living rom so someone is always crashing there). She also has a nice cross section of friends who are 06's and 07's (right now she is thinking about going in to the housing draw with them to get a crack at a senior apt.)

She does admit that one of the draw backs is that they are a little far away from everyone else (with the exception of the gym) and she "feels" it every morning going to class. Her roommate (who is from MA brought 2 pikes to campus from home so weather permitting they do ride from place to place. BYW, she said that the views from the blaconies are amazing.

I see. How about the "special events" they talk about? The free tickets, trips, special concerts, etc. Are those really that exclusive to EW or could you do the same from another dorm? Thanks so much, guys.

Raspberry,

when Xan comes on he can give you the first hand answer to this question, however I do think that some things are open to everyone.

Here is the ew link

I also sent you a pm

I lived in mixed class housing freshman year, by request, and loved it. The dorms are in better locations, and the floors are fun. They aren't as lovey-dovey as the all freshman floors, or the EW floors, but they are a good way to meet and get advice from upperclassmen.

Concerning the free tickets and stuff...tickets I believe they only give out to EWers (and it's not like anyone from the River actually comes over here looking for tickets to stuff). As far as trips are concerned, they usually wait and see if they have filled the slots with just people from EW, and if they haven't they open it up to the whole campus. I don't actually do any of that stuff myself...I kinda just sleep and work and sometimes relax here, and the rest of the time I hang out with my friends in the Choates or the River or on Webster. No one "snubs" you because you live in East Wheelock...that would just be silly. Sometimes somebody might make a joke about it or something, but on Dartmouth people are really cool anyway, and no one is about to make a big deal out of something stupid like that. Honestly, if you live in East Wheelock and want to party and be social, it just means that you have to walk farther to get to frat row. Not only this, but my floor happens to be really cool and social. We hang out in each others rooms and also sometimes we go out to the frats together, and we've done stuff like Secret Santa and a secret admirer thingie throughout the year. There's no one who like a crazy anti-social person. There are a few people that like to study more and stay in their rooms more, but definitely no horror stories. It's really a luck of the draw thing, I think. So, I haven't really found it to be a problem at all, and if you want to try it, I recommend it. You can always move out later.

Did Sybbie say there were balconies?? That would be absolutely amazing, but Dartmouth dorms don't go very high do they?
