My vision is slightly worse than perfect, and I wear glasses occasionally (mostly to see the board in school and other times when i need to see something far away).

I can still see pretty well without glasses so I don’t think the academy issued glasses would be a necessity for me. If I got the issued glasses from the academy, would i be required to wear them at all times during BCT?

Why not wear them? Seeing well far outweighs any coolness factor...BCT is not the best time for acting cool, imo. Besides, it's not like you'll be the only one with BCGs.

Go for it if you want. I almost started wearing glasses as I came in at 20/60 in both eyes. But, believe it or not glasses are probably the best kept secret in optometry. I luckily picked this doctor who believed in a different approach than glasses. He used vision therapy to get my vision up to 20/20 in both eyes. It really worked! If I had gone anywhere else it would be BCG. And before you worry that it might be disqualifying or something theres no lasers, no rays, no surgery. Its just a simple "exercises" to improve your vision. Maybe its not for everyone but maybe you might give it a shot. I very much like the ability to be "fully qualified" for pilot duty:)

One thing I should note is that this therapy is usually only done with younger individuals. He'd never done it with someone as old as me (18), but he believed he could do it. The other doctor more closely associated with the process was actually upset and said it was too late for me (most kids are between 2 and 12, when the eyes are still developing apparently). So I don't know how far you will get, but check it out if you want.

I'd say if you need them go for it, not that bad, but I know they really bugged my roomate, she said it hurt her eyes when she was eating at attention because you have to look way down, to the point where she got sick of it and sat on them one night so that she couldn't where them from the next day one "because they broke" she was fine without them and they weren't worth the hassle/strain. up to you!

so, everyone looks ridiculous in basic, but I got them the first day and never wore them again. I wasn't used to glasses and they were more annoying than useful.

ragmanlaw, if those techniques honestly worked then we'd see a more widespread use of them. However, may I be the first to suggest that your story is anecdotal at best.

I don't think BCGs for six weeks will be THAT bad. I mean, sure, they're really dorky but it'll probably be more important to focus on what the cadre are making you do rather than how great you look.

And raimius is right... there will be plenty of people wearing them. Including me..

It's not what I'll look like in BCG's that I care about. Its not like I'm going to be hooking up with any girls this summer.

The thing is, I hardly ever wear glasses, so wearing BCGs all summer would be a hassle. However, if you're not required to wear them all the time, I may be able to use them occassionally. Does anyone know if it's a requirement to wear the BCGs at all times?

yup at least for my flight it was, that's why one of my girls broke hers since they annoyed her and she was required to wear them all the time even when she didn't need them
