My son wears glasses occassionally and contacts occassionally. I know that during BCT contacts are not allowed and the academy gives you glasses to wear. My question is: Do you have to wear the glasses given to you all of the time or only when you need to, like during a written test, etc?
Thanks!

All the time. If you have glasses, you wear them all the time in Basic. (some squad MIGHT allow you not to, but usually its just part of the experience).

oh joy, what great fun it will be to have a pea-head and wear big, thick, brown, thick, ugly, thick glasses!!!! hahaha

i dont need them all the time, just for distance

Thank you. That is what I thought. Interesting look, isn't it.

My daughter had to wear them all the way up to acceptence day. When looking for her pics on webguy, I would look for "Wheres Waldo", It did narrow it down more! They have not changed that style of glasses for the cadets, even though many have requested it. They can put a man on the moon, but those glasses will probably always stay the same.

all part of bein a basic, i suppose... its all in tradition :)

We always referred to them as "BC Glasses - Birth Control Glasses". With them, you are guaranteed not to get a date, meet girls/guys, and thus not be able to get pregnant. They are very affective. LOL!!!

Yep, good old BCG's, as we always referred to them.

Actually, 2 people in my basic flight got away with never wearing their BCG's, and another person got through 1st Beast before she had to wear hers, so it does happen. Even if you feel like you don't need them, though, just live with it. As was mentioned before, it's all part of the Basic experience. There will be some stuff you don't understand the purpose of, but those things will be done anyway. Some of that is tradition, and some of that is just part of being in Basic. You'll understand later if you don't now.

There is one good thing about BCG's...they can create some pretty funny memories (for instance, one of our Cadre put on the biggest BCG's he could find, and purposely looked as nerdy as possible). Good times.;)

Since you get 2 pairs, one guy in my flight intentionally broke the bridge of one pair (no easy task, lol) and taped them with scotch tape and masking tape. He looked rediculous and we all got a good laugh.

To comment on those who are worried about how they look during BCT, IT WON'T MATTER. No one one cares if you look a little goofy, because there is so much going on and most other people look goofy too.

To add a few details regarding the glasses worn during BCT:

They are special impact resistant frames and lenses made of a plastic designed to absorb impact without shattering and injuring the wearer. They are also thicker than standard "dress" lenses for this reason. While the style leaves something to be desired, they are designed expressly with the purpose of protecting the wearer - a good feature on some of the courses and during physical combat situations.

when that accidental boot hits you in the face you'll be glad they don't break!

they look bad but nobody cares, plus yea they're virtually indestructible unless you try to break them or something. you'll definitely be glad you had them after stuff like the obstacle and assault course.

We have daughter's from BCT this year and they sure took a beating. They DID break and she had to continue wearing them . They were DUCKED TAPED together. We have some great pictures of her look quite lovely. hahahahah .Sh e couldn't wait for Acceptance Day to get rid of them.lol lol All part of the summer fun.

There were three people in my flight that didn't have to wear BCGs until Jack's because their glasses weren't ready on inprocessing day. You definitely want to have them in Jack's so that you don't break your own pair. One of the guys in my flight had his BCGs but kept changing them out for his civilian pair, and he actually kind of got in honor trouble because he tried to hide them in his BDU socks one day so he could wear them to church when they specifically told him not to... you don't want to try that. One of the lenses on his civilian pair ended up cracking down the middle on the O-course.
