Be BRUTALLY HONEST with me! Do I have a chance?

-GPA: 3.96
-I moved to a new school in the beginning of the junior year, and I struggled in the first semester (3 Bs in Hon Pre-Calc, AP USH and Hon English). But, then I maintained straight As.
-School doesn’t rank.
-AP: Junior- Psych (5) and USH (3)
Senior: Calculus, Biology, Government, Chemistry, English
-SAT: 1440
-EC:
Both old and new schools have different clubs; so it is difficult to stay committed to these ECs.
-National Karate (9, 10)
-Honors Reading Program (9, 10)
-Chess Club (11, 12)
-Psychology Association (11, 12)
-Science Club (11, 12)
-National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (11)
-Tutoring (9, 10)
-Leadership (11, 12)
-Research on nanobiology with a professor who attended Harvard, M.I.T and Princeton
-I won three scholarships: Young Naturalist-semi-finalist, Fountainhead Essay and state award for Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program. My essay is about my hearing loss, the obstacles I faced and how I overcame them. I have the recommendations of two AP teachers’ recommendations and the guidance counselor.

depends on how hard your classes are. try to bring up your test scores as well...

I think your SAT is fine (i.e. don't retake).

I don't think the NYLFM counts for much. If you pay $$$, you can go.

when I visited brown they mentioned NYLF as an honor.
but I agree that it doesn't count very much when it comes right down to it.

I forgot to mention my w GPA is 4.17

In addition to my w GPA of 4.17 (is it too low?), I received President's Gold Student Service Award for volunteering over 100 hours, and I have been on straight A's honor rolls for 2 straight years. However, I feel insecure that I would be accepted. What is your opinion?

what is your courseload?

My new counselor told me that I am taking a rigorous courseload.

My old school sucks...it offers only honors courses for math and science
Freshman: Honors Geometry (only honor course offered to freshmen)
Sophomore:Honors Algebra 2 and Honors Biology (received the highest grade in her class)

My new school has higher standards, more honors and APS courses and 7-point scale (one student got early accepted to M.I.T, one got early accepted to Harvard, and another got deferred in Princeton so far)
Junior: Honors Math Analysis, Honors English 11, Honors Chemistry, AP Psychology and AP United States History
Senior:AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Government, AP Chemistry, AP English and Honors Physics

You researched with someone who attended Harvard, M.I.T and Princeton?? I guess that's impressive, although it seems like you're merely focusing on his schools instead of what YOU actually worked on.

Anyway, I think you have just as good a chance as the majority of the applicants. You obviously aren't a "shoe-in" as you've admitted yourself, but you still have a chance.

i got in early decision with a 1350SAT, white male, so dont tell anyone that 1440 is too low, thats a crock of ****!

on the other hand, I was deferred from trinity with a 33 ACT (and a 1370 SAT I), so I don't think that test scores are the deciding factor. Write good essays. I think your research will be helpful if you were deeply involved in it. Good luck to you!

Do gender, minority and disability affect an applicant's chance? If so, I am a deaf female African American (if it is helpful to you).

wow your stats are very impressive! i bet they will make a difference, you deserve to get in!

pattycake999-

I think you have a pretty good chance. I got in ED with about the same courseload as you. That being said though, I wouldnt focus too much on test scores and courses; in the long run, I think those are really just qualifiers (and i think you qualify). When the admissions office receives your app, they really do actually separate them into "high score/low score" piles. If you don't believe me you should read this book written by a duke admissions officer. It's about 200 pages and it is completely about Duke admissions. Its titled: "Admissions Confidential : An Insider's Account of the Elite College Selection Process" by Rachel Toor. It's interesting, it taught me alot, but I warn you, it can make you really stressed out and make you think you wont ever get in. You just need to be able to overcome that. All in all, i think you have a good shot. Be an optimist!

On your disability/minority position.

Your stats are great! I agree with Bsballstar8, you really do deserve to get in. However, being female doesnt help at all. Also, I believe if i remember correctly, that disability is considered only in the sense that it helps them to understand how it affected your academic/extracurricular performance, which is to say it puts you as a person into context. A handicap doesn't, however, increase your chance of admissions by putting you in a minority category as does being african american. Either way, you definitely are a very very strong candidate and, in my book, should get in.

Chuckleybob: What are the score ranges for these high/low score piles? I'm just curious.

Well, im not sure that these "high/low pile" scores still hold true; The ones currently used by Duke could be higher or lower than what i tell you. I got them from a book that was all about Duke admissions ("Admissions Confidential: An Insider's account of the elite college process" By Rachel Toor). That being said, the book cited anything above 1480 as a "high scorer."i think low scorer was anyone below a 1300. I'm not sure what they do with the inbetweens. These figures are not definite and most likely have changed since the book was published in 2001.

are you an ayn rand student essay winner?

yes I am. Why?

hey, random, but where did you go to NYLF med...i went to DC before 11th grade...
