I heard that today, so I thought I should post it. How funny. Actually, these two words came from the Stanford Provost himself (I was told), as he welcomed the class of 2008.

What exactly is this rivalry thing between Stanford and UCB?
Is it just that Stanford and UCB are so close, that there automatically is rivalry.
Or, is it that Stanford people are insanely jealous of Berkeley's reputation across the world, although it's not even a private school?

more like Berkeley students jealous of Stanford's prestige!!!

Just kidding, they are both excellent academic institutions with excellent students. The top students at Berkeley are as good as, if not better, than the average Stanford students.

haha side note: Cal students frequently turn that phrase around by splitting up the first word so the phrase becomes "Be at Cal." With this phrase, it makes the Stanford students appear as though they desperately wanna be at Cal instead of on The Farm. I love this college rivalry - I think it's one of the most creative ones in this country. By creativity, I don't mean just that one little thing I just mentioned, but by the hardcore spirit and effort that goes into Big Game week and stuff (though, of course, there are some other schools that have waaay more diehard fans).

its just a friendly rivalry that cal and stanford, as two of the world's leading universities, have. Really, the schools are almost exact opposites in terms of demographics ( public vs private, urban vs suburban, hippies vs yuppies, gigantic school vs small/middle sized school.. etc). Its a great and fun rivalry = )

i love how the stanford-cal rivalry is not as ugly as UCLA and USC's...see I think stanford and cal are more creative in their rivalry (like that 'be at cal' thing) and stanford students (im sure berkeley's are too) are willing to admit that berkeley students are just as intelligent as stanford students. would u ever hear that from a UCLA student about USC or vice versa?

krk - Palo Alto ( at least the western part) is very professional and suburban. It is not at all like Berkeley or the people that live in Berkeley. Palo Alto is the one that has STanford Mall (which has Versace, Gucci and all that good stuff) and Berkeley has Telegraph (which u can buy all sorts of interesting stuff *hint: NOT GUCCI or VERSACE). Thats how yuppies (not 100% the people at Stanford, but the surrounding area) applies to Stanford.

:-) ah, Stanford Basketball, how I love thee.

Cal is actually less liberal than stanford nowadays. Berkeley College Republicans is one of the largest college republican groups in the nation.

The only time anyone REALLY cares is during Big Game week, other than that, I've seen people wearing stanfurd gear around campus and nobody seemed to care. The guy in the article that Byerly linked doesn't know what he's talking about as far as Cal/stanfurd, as he says himself. He says that its not a real rivalry because stunfurd doesnt care, but which school does a huge, lame theatrical production (GAY-ities)every year before the Big Game taking pot shots at the might Cal Bears? All Cal does is have a bonfire.

just wait till you get to campus. Big Game Week it's big, because it's fun. We get to destroy cute little stuffed bears (I have a dead stuffed bear hanging outside my door) and wear shirts with awesome slogans like "Cal" on the front and "Stanford was too hard to spell" on the back. But in terms of REAL rivalry-ness? Nuh-uh. People can wear blue and yellow around here without fearing for their safety. At Berkeley, people are strongly advised not to wear Stanford colors, much less Stanford gear. My best friend doesn't tell anyone that her dad's a Stanford professor (she goes to Cal).

Sure, Cal games are huge. The basketball game against them was AWESOME (there I go on basketball again). Makes for some excitement every now and then.
