Stanford+Berkeley= friends

Hey guys, I am so happy that my best friend got into Berkeley and that he is enrolling. Since I am going to Stanford (SCEA), it is great that my best friend is not gonna be that far from me. My question is, isn't it weird that my best friend is going to Berkeley, yet I am going to Stanford? Since they are arch-rivals.

I know this has probably happened before, but I was just wondering what the people at Berkeley thought. Honestly, I love Berkeley too. Great school. Won't it be weird every year at the BIG GAME when I am up in arms with my best friend who is now going to be a Cal Bear. Maybe I can bring peace to this hateful rivalry...probably not though.

The thing is, my friend was supposed to go to UCLA, but I convinced him to go to Berkeley if he got in. And, since he did, I couldn't be happier.

Lol... scary, we're on the same boat, even down to the LA part, though I have yet to successfully convince my friend to go for CAL (work in progress!). I've talked to Cal students about this and they pretty much say that they're generally cool with people from Stanford as long as we're not too haughty and respect Cal, though the atmosphere does tend to change around game time. You can see a Stanford sweatshirt in Berkeley and (except during Big Game time), it doesn't get that much of a reaction, especially since Stanford students are allowed access into Cal libraries. Don't take the rivalry too seriously =)!

Practically, no one gives a damn where you go to school except for that Big Game day. I've heard people from Stanford regularly come to Berkeley and hang out because it is so boring in Palo Alto. This college rivalry thing is, meh, a little silly sometimes. To me it has two main purpose: 1) for the Big Game, of course; 2) for professors to make light-hearted (mostly cheesy) jokes in lectures. Seriously, no one laughs at those "jokes" anymore in an upper division lecture. It gets old.

@hypnosx, yeah I toured both Berkeley and Stanford. Palo Alto was okay, nothing special, but Berkeley's city was pretty tight. The food was better, and it was livlier as a community. I don't know where, but I ate some Juevos Rancheros for breakfast down at some restaurant by Berkeley, and it was one of the best meals I have ever had. Seriously, amazing. lol.

are you kidding? it's not weird at all for one of you to go to stanford and one to berkeley. one of my best friends goes to stanford and i know a lot of other people there from my high school. the rivalry (to me at least) is just for fun. people at both schools make jokes about it, and don't wear red to football games if you value that article of clothing, but it seems to me like it's just to build up some school spirit and pretend like we hate each other all in good fun.

Take off that Reeeeeddddd shirt!!!!!

YUCK!!! you are going to sssssss (bears dont say the name of thy enemy!)

love the title of the thread, though!

The rivalry is very fun.

Congrats on your acceptances. Maybe you can choose the better, more livelier school for grad studies. ;)

Are socializing opportunities available between cal and stanford students? Or would it be difficult to maintain that relationship?

I guess if you call chasing a stanford student with fire/pitchforks socializing opportunities, then yes :)

The rivalry is just for the big game. Outside of it, it's all just fun. In fact, you'll see many Stanford and Berkeley people collaborating in real life.

It's funny to note that I have a cousin from Berkeley who married someone from Stanford.
